Mowing lawns on Saturdays around a full-time job

Plenty of people ask this, and the answer is yes with limits. A Saturday round of ten to fourteen regulars is a real second income, and the gear pays for itself before the end of the first month. A second full-time job it is not. The people who try to run thirty lawns a week around a 9-to-5 quit by November. Here is the version that lasts.

The hours you can legally mow

Daylight and the law set the shape of the whole thing. Victoria's residential noise rules (the Environment Protection Regulations 2021, checked on the EPA's site on 12 September 2026) say a lawn mower must not be heard inside a neighbour's home before 7 am or after 8 pm on weekdays, or before 9 am or after 8 pm on weekends and public holidays. Petrol snippers and blowers sit under the same rule. So a 9-to-5 worker has Saturday from 9, Sunday from 9 if they want it, and weeknights from about 5:30 to 8 pm from October to March, while there is light. May to August has no weeknight window at all, and Melbourne lawns barely need one then.

Three patterns that work

Each row is a different amount of your life. Pick one and stick to it for a season before adding the next.

Those are gross figures, before fuel, insurance, tax and any platform fee, and they assume a tight round where every lawn is within ten minutes of the last one. A Saturday spent driving between Epping and Eltham pays about half the table.

Why the maths is better as a side job

Oddly, the numbers work better for you than for someone doing this as their first job. You have wages coming in, so the three lean months at the start don't hurt. The kit pays for itself in three Saturdays. And you can afford to be picky: take only the jobs within ten minutes of home, and say no to the overgrown ones. Customers won't mind. A lot of them work Monday to Friday too, and a Saturday cut suits them better than a Tuesday one.

What to buy

Skip the $400 Bunnings mower. You'll be running it hard on the one day a week you can't afford a breakdown, and a domestic mower doing six lawns in a row is a short-term tool. Buy the good-enough kit instead: a commercial Honda push mower, a straight-shaft Stihl snipper and a petrol blower, about $2,100 from a dealer, all of it fitting in a wagon or a hatchback with the seats down. At $110 a lawn that is 19 lawns to pay off, or about three Saturdays. The paperwork

One evening. An ABN as a sole trader is free at abr.gov.au and usually approved on the spot; anyone charging you to register one is filling in the same form. No licence exists for lawn mowing in Victoria. Public liability insurance runs $40-70 a month for a sole trader and covers the stone through the window, not your own back. Ring your car insurer and tell them the car carries work gear on Saturdays, because an undeclared work car is a reason to refuse a claim. How it compares to a full round

A part-time round of 20 regulars grosses $35,000-45,000 a year, which is where the both-weekend-days pattern lands. A full solo round of 40 regulars plus one-offs is $75,000-85,000 gross and takes five days, so a Saturday mower is running roughly a third of a full-timer's income for a fifth of the days. Five things that catch side-job mowers out

• Tax. The mowing income lands on top of your salary, so it's taxed at your top marginal rate. On a $70,000 wage roughly a third of every mowing dollar goes to the ATO. Keep the receipts and the kilometre log; the deductions are worth more to you than to a full-timer.
• Reliability. A regular who's booked for Saturday morning doesn't care that you had a work thing. Take fewer regulars than you can handle, so a lost Saturday is a reschedule rather than a week of apologies.
• Winter is a full stop. Monthly cuts and no weeknight window turn a Saturday round into two or three lawns. Bank the spring money.
• Your employment contract. Most don't care what you do on Saturday. A few have a clause about outside work or use of the company car. Read it once.
• The body. Eight lawns on Saturday after a five-day week is a lot for the first month. Start at four.
