| City of Boroondara | Boroondara does not mow, water or spray nature strips; the community expectation is that residents mow the strip outside their place. The FOGO bin (dark green, lime lid) takes lawn clippings, leaves and branches to 75 mm, not bagged, and is collected weekly. One 120 L bin and a 7 L caddy come with the rates through the Waste Environment Levy; a second or 240 L bin is a one-off $154. Across Gardiners Creek on the Stonnington side, the General Local Law 2018's untidy-premises clause caps grass on any land, strip included, at 30 cm, and the green-lid FOGO bin is fortnightly. | 12 Sep 2026 |
| City of Port Phillip | Port Phillip puts the nature strip's mowing and weeding on the owner or occupant, apart from the street trees, which the council cares for; it steps in only when a strip becomes a public health risk and prefers mediation before orders under Local Law No 1 (Community Amenity) 2013. Plantings on a strip stay under 1 m, and under 50 cm within 2 m of a driveway or 10 m of a corner. The green-lid FOGO bin (120 L standard, 80 L or 240 L on request) takes soil-free grass clippings and is collected weekly on the same night as garbage; houses pay a $90 kerbside FOGO charge on the 2026-27 rates notice. | 12 Sep 2026 |
| City of Stonnington | Stonnington's General Local Law 2018 counts the nature strip as land the owner and occupier must keep from becoming unsightly, with grass, alive or dead, not to exceed 30 cm in height. The strip is council land maintained by residents; a permit is needed to plant it, and the street trees are the council's to plant and prune. The green-lid FOGO bin (120 L for standalone homes, $89 a year) is collected fortnightly, alternating with recycling, with garbage weekly. | 12 Sep 2026 |
| City of Yarra | Yarra relies on the established community expectation that residents maintain and mow the nature strip abutting their property; the strip is public land from the boundary to the road and must not become a trip or fire hazard. Street trees on it are the council's under its Street Tree Policy, so don't plant, prune or remove one.
