West of the Maribyrnong the city flattens onto the Victorian Volcanic Plain - cracking basalt clay, little mature shade, boggy in August and set hard in February. The Wyndham corridor from Werribee to Point Cook and Tarneit is mostly estates on instant turf; Footscray, Yarraville and Williamstown are the older, smaller blocks near the river and the bay.

City of Brimbank	Brimbank keeps the roadside nature strips as council land but runs no mowing round for them: it relies on the goodwill and established community expectation that residents will mow, weed and maintain their strip and keep it free from hazards. One blocking a footpath or a sightline is prioritised once reported. The council's own program mows 1,117 sites, 1,253 hectares, at peak growth.	9 Sep 2026
City of Hobsons Bay	Hobsons Bay requires residents to maintain the nature strip beside their property and keep it free of trip hazards; the council does no maintenance of strips and will not reinstate grass. The light-green-lid food and garden bin is collected fortnightly, 120 L as standard, with a 240 L available for an added annual charge.	12 Sep 2026
City of Maribyrnong	Residents maintain the nature strip abutting their property - mowing, weeding, trimming edges, picking up litter; the council selects, plants and maintains the street trees. Green-lid food and garden organics bin, 240 L standard, fortnightly on the alternate week to recycling, in the rates; houses and 1-4 unit developments only.	12 Sep 2026
City of Melton	Melton puts the strip on the resident: regular mowing, weeding, litter, and levelling the surface so it is not a trip hazard. The council does not mow or water nature strips at all, anything other than grass needs a landscaping application first, and it will not repair a strip that vehicles have damaged by parking on it.	9 Sep 2026
Wyndham City Council	Wyndham's Community Amenity Local Law 2023 requires the owner or occupier to keep the grass on the adjoining nature strip under 30 cm; the council mows only hazards, and long grass is reported on 1300 023 411. Trees work the other way: any council- or developer-planted tree on the strip is not yours to maintain, and cutting or damaging one is an offence under the same local law.	9 Sep 2026
City of Melton and City of Brimbank	Hillside sits in two councils and neither mows nature strips for residents: Melton states plainly that it does not mow or water them and the resident maintains the strip abutting their property, while Brimbank keeps the strips as council land but relies on residents to mow, weed and keep theirs free from hazards.	9 Sep 2026
City of Wyndham and City of Melton	Two sets of rules in one suburb. Wyndham's local law requires the adjoining owner or occupier to keep strip grass under 30 cm, mows only hazards, and makes damaging a council street tree an offence. Melton states that the council does not mow or water nature strips and the resident maintains theirs, including levelling out trip hazards.	9 Sep 2026
