What lawn mowing actually costs in Melbourne

Ask three mowers to quote the same lawn and you can get numbers $40 apart. Nobody's ripping you off - "mow the lawn" covers a dozen variables, and plenty of quotes are still a guess made from a moving car. These are the numbers across Melbourne right now, and what moves them.

That's for a standard visit - all lawn areas mowed, edges trimmed along paths, fences and garden beds, and the clippings blown off hard surfaces - including GST, on a lawn that's been cut sometime in the last month. Hourly, Melbourne mowers charge $45-85, with most sitting around $55-65.
Prices in the outer north run a touch under the bayside suburbs for the same square metres. What you're paying for is time, and time is mostly area, so a Mill Park back yard and a Brighton back yard of the same size cost about the same to mow - the difference is that the Mill Park block usually has more lawn on it.
What pushes a quote up
- Long grass. More than about six weeks since the last cut and you're into first-cut territory: slower going, multiple passes, a mountain of clippings. Expect 50-100% on top for the first visit. We've written up exactly what a long-grass cut involves.
- Access. No side gate means the mower carries everything through the house or lifts it over a fence. Steep banks, terraced beds and tight courtyards where a 21-inch mower won't fit all add time.
- Clippings taken away. If they can't go in your green bin, taking them costs $20-40 - tip fees are real. Most mowers will happily use your bin for free.
- Extras. Weeding, hedges, gutters and whipper-snipping a paddock's edge are separate jobs with separate prices. Agree on them before the visit, not on the doorstep.
- One-off vs regular. A regular fortnightly round is easier work (shorter grass) and predictable income, so mowers price it 10-15% under their one-off rate. This is the single easiest way to pay less.
Why the $40 quote is the expensive one
Somebody offering to mow a full-size lawn for $40 is either brand new, uninsured, or planning to spend twenty minutes on a job that needs fifty. A fair price for an average lawn works out around a dollar a minute of actual work once you count travel, fuel, blades and insurance. Quotes far below that get made up somewhere: edges skipped, clippings left, or a no-show the week it rains and a better job comes up. The going rate for the classic quarter-acre-block lawn is $80-105, and there are good reasons it settled there.
Acreage is a different sport
