Terms of use

Version 30 August 2026 · draft for legal review · Mowie Pty Ltd

The short version. Listing is free and you're not obliged to hire. When you accept a bid you're hiring an independent mower at their price; Mowie collects the payment for them. Nothing is charged until you've seen the photo (or 48 hours after it arrives if you don't respond - we remind you first). If something's wrong, raise an issue before approving, or up to 7 days after. The full terms follow; they're the ones that count.

1. Who we are and what Mowie is

Mowie is operated by Mowie Pty Ltd ("Mowie", "we", "us"). Mowie is an online marketplace that connects people who want their lawn mowed ("customers", "you") with independent lawn mowing businesses ("mowers"). We are a venue and, for payments, each mower's limited payment collection agent. We don't perform mowing services, employ mowers, or supervise their work. Every contract for mowing is between you and the mower you hire. These terms are the contract between you and Mowie about using the platform; mowers are bound by our vendor terms. Our privacy policy and guarantee page form part of these terms.

2. Your account

You must be 18 or over. Give us accurate details, keep your password to yourself, and tell us straight away if you think someone else has used your account - you're responsible for what happens under it until you do. We confirm your email address by a link; a mobile number is optional (the mower you hire can call you on the day). One person per account. You can delete your account at any time from the account page once no job is in progress; section 10 says what happens then.

3. Listings and bids

Listing a lawn is free and puts you under no obligation to hire. What you tell mowers - lawn size, condition of the grass, access, gate, dog, obstacles - is what they price from, so it needs to be accurate. Approved mowers near you see the lawn outline, your photos and those details; they don't see your street address, your phone number, a gate code, or whether anyone will be home until you hire them (the privacy policy sets this out).

Mowers set their own prices; we don't set them, and the price guide we show is an estimate only. Accepting a bid creates a contract between you and that mower for the service described, at the bid price, on or after the mower's stated earliest day. A "standard visit" means mowing, edging, trimming and blowing off paths, with clippings handled the way you chose; anything else is an extra to be agreed in chat before work starts.

The bid is the price. If a mower finds the job materially bigger than you described, they may ask through the app, before starting, to change the price for that visit; you can accept or keep the original price, and nothing changes unless you accept. If a mower asks you for more money on the day, or for cash or a bank transfer, don't pay it - decline in the app and tell us at hello@mowie.com.au. Mowers who do this are removed.

A listing without a hire closes after 72 hours; you can relist it. Bids are the mowers' own offers and may be withdrawn until you accept.

4. Bookings, scheduling and cancellation

The scheduled date is the mower's stated earliest day. A mower may move a job for weather with notice through the app; we tell you when they do, and when they're on their way.

Cancelling. Before the mower has marked "on the way", cancel by messaging them in the app or contacting us - there's no cancellation fee. After the mower is on the way or on site, a cancellation counts against your account; repeated late cancellations may limit it. If the mower doesn't turn up, tell us: it counts against them, and you can relist. Make the lawn accessible as you described (gate unlocked or code given, dog secured); if a mower can't do the job because access wasn't as described, we may treat it as a late cancellation.

Regular mows. If you make a job recurring, the same mower comes back at the same price and frequency. You can skip a visit, pause or cancel the arrangement from your dashboard at any time before the next visit is created (about three days ahead); after that, use the chat.

5. Payments

Payments are processed by Stripe under Stripe's own terms; your card is entered with Stripe and we never see the full number. When you accept a bid you authorise us, as the mower's limited payment collection agent, to charge your saved card for the bid amount (or a changed price you accepted in the app, less any credit) when you approve the completed job - or automatically 48 hours after the mower marks the job complete with a photo if you take no action. We email you 24 hours before an automatic approval. Paying Mowie discharges your payment obligation to the mower. We never hold your funds: Stripe moves the money to the mower, and our commission is deducted from the mower's side. Mowie charges customers nothing - no fees, no booking fee.

We issue your receipt on the mower's behalf. If the mower is registered for GST, the price includes GST and the receipt shows their ABN. If a card is declined we email you to update it; the job stays unpaid until you do, and the mower may pursue payment directly. You can add or remove saved cards from your account, except the last card while a job is in progress.

6. If something's wrong: issues, credits and the 7-day window

If you're not satisfied, don't approve: raise an issue from the job page, with a photo if you can. Your card isn't charged while an issue is open. The mower is offered a return visit first, usually within 48 hours; if that doesn't fix it, we apply a make-good credit so you pay less, or nothing where the job wasn't done. A person, not a bot, decides, normally within 24 hours of both sides responding.

After a job has been approved - by you or automatically - you can still raise an issue for 7 days. The mower keeps their pay for work they did; anything we refund then comes from Mowie's side, back to the card you paid with. Credits and refunds we grant are goodwill. They sit on top of, and don't replace, any rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law against the mower as the supplier of the service (see section 11). See our guarantee page for the plain-English version.

7. Damage, insurance and the Insured badge

Mowie doesn't insure mowers' work. Our guarantee covers the quality of the mow, not damage to property. A mower shows an Insured badge when they've given us a certificate of currency for public liability insurance whose expiry date hasn't passed; we check the document and the date, not the policy with the insurer, and cover may have conditions and excesses - ask the mower for a copy if it matters to you. Where a mower hasn't provided a certificate we tell you before you hire and ask you to acknowledge it. Any claim for damage is between you and the mower (and their insurer, if they have one).

If a mower damages your property, tell us within 7 days through the job page or hello@mowie.com.au. Within 2 business days we'll give you the mower's name, business name, ABN, contact details and, where they've given us one, the details of their insurance certificate, so you can make a claim directly or through their insurer. Mowers agree to this when they join, and we ask them to respond to you within 2 business days. Unresolved damage complaints count against a mower and lead to removal.

Your side of it: keep pets secured, and tell mowers about hazards they can't see - sprinkler heads, cables, hoses, buried things, soft ground. You're responsible for damage caused by a hazard you knew about and didn't mention.

8. Photos, reviews, messages and your content

You own what you upload. You give Mowie a non-exclusive licence to store your photos and listing details, show them to the mowers who need them, and show completion photos of your lawn on our public suburb pages without your name, address or exact location. That licence ends when you delete your account, and you can ask us at privacy@mowie.com.au to stop using a particular photo publicly at any time. We remove embedded location data from photos and resize them on upload.

Only customers who have paid for a job through Mowie may review it. Reviews must be honest and about the service. We don't edit reviews, we don't pay for them, and we don't remove a review for being negative; we remove reviews that are unrelated to the job, contain personal information beyond the work, or are abusive or unlawful. Messages in the app are between you and the mower you hired; we can read them to resolve an issue or a safety concern.

9. Acceptable use

Give true information. Don't use Mowie to harass, threaten or discriminate against anyone. Don't post false listings, don't use mowers' contact details for anything other than the job, don't scrape or access the platform by automated means, and don't try to break or bypass its security. Pay for jobs booked through Mowie through Mowie - that's what makes the photo-before-payment guarantee and the issue process work. Whether you and a mower choose to work together outside Mowie afterwards is up to you.

10. Suspending and closing accounts

You can delete your account at any time once no job is in progress; we anonymise your details as the privacy policy describes, and keep transaction records as tax law requires. We may suspend or close your account for a breach of these terms - a false listing, abuse of a mower, non-payment, fraud. For anything other than safety or fraud we'll tell you why and give you 7 days to respond before we act, and any job in progress is completed or cancelled fairly.

11. Your consumer rights and our liability

The Australian Consumer Law applies. For the mowing itself, the consumer guarantees - that services are provided with due care and skill, are fit for purpose and are delivered within a reasonable time - are the mower's obligations as the supplier; our issue process helps you get a remedy from them and adds our own credits. For Mowie's own service, the platform, those guarantees apply to us and we'll fix problems with it.

To the extent the law allows: our liability to you in connection with the platform is limited to re-supplying the service; we aren't liable for the acts or omissions of mowers or other customers, or for loss that wasn't reasonably foreseeable. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that can't be excluded, and nothing limits our liability for our own fraud or for negligence causing death or injury.

12. Privacy

Our privacy policy explains what we collect, who sees what (including exactly what mowers see before and after you hire them), where data is stored, and which decisions are automated. By using Mowie you agree to it.

13. Changes to these terms

We'll give you at least 14 days' notice by email and in the app before a material change to these terms applies to you; you can close your account before then if you don't agree. A change doesn't apply to a job you'd already booked, and we never change the price of a booked job. Corrections and clarifications that don't change your rights may be posted with a new version date only.

14. Complaints and disputes

If you have a complaint about Mowie, contact us at hello@mowie.com.au or through the contact page. We acknowledge complaints within 2 business days and aim to resolve them within 10. Privacy complaints follow the process in the privacy policy, and you can go to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. For consumer matters you can also contact Consumer Affairs Victoria or apply to VCAT; nothing in these terms stops you going to a court or tribunal.

15. General

These terms are governed by the law of Victoria, Australia, and its courts have jurisdiction. If any part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest still applies. You can't transfer your account or these terms to anyone else; we may transfer them to a successor operator of Mowie (for example a company set up to run it) with notice to you. Notices from us go to the email address on your account. These terms, the privacy policy and the guarantee page are the whole agreement between you and Mowie about the platform. If we don't enforce a term on one occasion, we can still enforce it later.
