Lawn mowing in Melbourne's bayside suburbs

Not open yet: 13 suburbs mapped, nobody being signed up here so far. Suburbs open one cluster at a time as local mowers join. List your lawn now, free, and it is shown to the first local mowers before anyone else's.

From St Kilda down the bay to Mordialloc the ground is the sandbelt: sand over clay that drains fast and dries out in summer, with sandy loam and dune sand on the high ground and heavier clayey sands and old swamp deposits lower down.

Nature strips and green bins here

What each council in bayside suburbs expects of the strip out the front and where the clippings go, read off the council's own page.

CouncilNature strip and garden wasteChecked
City of BaysideBayside residents are required by law to maintain the nature strip in front of their property, while the council manages the trees on it; plantings on the strip are kept to 0.6 m and anything outside the guidelines needs a planting approval. The food and green waste bin is optional and not on the rates: order one for a one-off $104.85 (240 L or 120 L, with a kitchen caddy) and it is emptied weekly, with general waste fortnightly, as it has been since July 2022.12 Sep 2026
City of KingstonKingston makes residents responsible for mowing, watering and general maintenance of the nature strip; the council assists with hazards and prunes the strip trees every two years but does not mow unless the strip is a hazard. Trees on the strip are council-owned, and plantings are limited to 0.5 m high and set back 0.5 m from the kerb. The green-lid food and garden bin is a standard service, collected fortnightly on alternate weeks with recycling, on garbage day.12 Sep 2026
City of Port PhillipPort Phillip says property owners or occupants are responsible for maintaining their nature strip, excluding the street trees, which the council cares for; it steps in only where a strip poses a public health risk and prefers mediation to compliance orders. The FOGO bin (120 L standard, 80 L or 240 L on request) is emptied weekly on the same night as garbage and recycling, but only properties with a garden and space for another bin get one; the kerbside service charge is $90 for 2026-27 on the rates notice.12 Sep 2026
Glen Eira City CouncilGlen Eira relies on property owners to maintain the nature strip next to their property, including mowing, weeding and edging, and to keep it safe and free of rubbish; street trees are the council's, and residents may not plant, prune or remove them. A Nature Strip Planting Permit costs $50 and unpermitted plantings may be removed at the owner's cost. The lime-green FOGO bin is a standard service emptied weekly, with a free kitchen caddy from Glen Eira Town Hall.12 Sep 2026
City of Bayside and City of KingstonSplit between two councils. Bayside residents are required by law to maintain the nature strip while the council manages its trees; the Bayside food and green waste bin is optional, a one-off $104.85, emptied weekly. Kingston makes residents responsible for mowing, watering and general maintenance of the strip and assists with hazards; its green-lid garden bin is a standard service, emptied fortnightly.12 Sep 2026
