It depends on the size, how long the grass is and how easy the yard is to get into. A typical 165 m² Melbourne lawn draws bids of about $80–105 for a one-off standard visit, and regulars get about 10% off. Every listing shows a live price guide measured from your lawn before any bids arrive.

Free for homeowners: listing, comparing bids and booking cost nothing. Mowers pay a flat 10% commission (plus GST) only when they get paid - nothing to join, nothing to bid.

No. Tell us how to access the yard (side gate, code, dog) in the notes. Only the mower you hire sees your address and gate code, and they send a photo when done.

Never at booking. Your card is saved when you hire, then charged only after you approve the finished-lawn photo. If you don't respond within 48 hours of the photo arriving, the job approves itself so the mower gets paid; you can still raise an issue afterwards.

Don't approve. Raise an issue from the job page with a photo. The mower gets first go at coming back to fix it; if it can't be fixed we apply a credit or don't charge. Our guarantee covers the quality of the mow. Damage to property is between you and the mower, which is why an Insured badge is worth looking for.

Every mower has their ABN checked against the Australian Business Register and their identity verified by Stripe. Mowers who upload a current public liability certificate show an Insured badge on their bids and rank higher. If you hire a mower without one, we say so plainly at checkout and ask you to acknowledge it. Mowie itself doesn't insure mowers' work.

Yes. Pick weekly, fortnightly or every four weeks when you list, or tap 'make it regular' on the receipt after a one-off. Skip, pause or cancel any time from your dashboard - no lock-in.

Before the mower is on the way, yes, from the job page. Once they've arrived and started, the job is charged after the photo like any other.

In Melbourne: fortnightly through the spring and summer growing season, stretching to every 3-4 weeks over winter. The real rule is never take more than a third of the blade off in one cut - if the lawn's getting away between visits, shorten the gap rather than mowing lower. Regulars also pay 10-15% less per visit than one-offs, so the tidier schedule is usually the cheaper one too.

A typical 165 m² suburban lawn is 40-60 minutes for the full service - mowing, edges along paths and fences, and blowing off the hard surfaces. A courtyard is 20-30 minutes; a 350 m² corner block more like an hour and a half. Overgrown lawns take a lot longer, which is why first cuts cost more.

Often, yes. List your lawn in the morning and mowers in your suburb see it straight away - each bid shows the mower's earliest day, and in our launch suburbs same-day or next-day is common outside the spring rush. Say it's urgent in your notes and the mowers with a gap will find you.

Four things sort the good from the lucky-dip: reviews that come from real paid jobs (not a Facebook comment from a mate), photos of their actual work, public liability insurance, and a fixed price agreed before anyone starts. On Mowie all four are on the bid itself - reviews can only be left by customers who paid through the platform, insured mowers carry a badge, and the bid is the price.

Some do, but it's usually not their main game - a landscaper's rate reflects design and construction work, so paying it for a fortnightly mow is hiring a chef to make toast. Dedicated mowing operators are set up for exactly this: right gear, tight rounds, sharper prices. Save the landscaper for the retaining wall.

The nature strip: yes - in Whittlesea, Banyule and most Victorian councils, maintaining the strip outside your place is the resident's job, and mowers include it if you ask (it's a line item on a Mowie listing). The neighbour's lawn: not illegal, but ask first - people are oddly touchy about surprise landscaping, and the fence-line strip is the classic driveway dispute starter.

Past about 1,000 m² the job usually moves to ride-on mowing at $80-120/hr, and paddock-length growth means slashing first. Nothing to join, nothing to bid. On each paid job we deduct a flat 10% + GST - on an $85 mow that's $8 - plus Stripe's card processing. Founding partners pay 0% for 3 months (24 seats left).

Yes - sole traders are fine. If you don't have one, it's free at abr.gov.au and usually issued on the spot; the whole form takes about 15 minutes.

18 or over to hold a Mowie account (we ask for your date of birth and Stripe verifies your ID), because you're contracting directly with customers and being paid. No upper limit.

Yes, through you: a parent or guardian (18+) holds the account, ABN and payouts, and the 15–17-year-old does the mowing with you supervising the first jobs. Push mowers only. See mowie.com.au/first-job for the house rules and to register your family.

Not to join. Upload a current public liability certificate (with its expiry date) and you get an Insured badge, rank higher in 'recommended', and customers hire you without an extra warning. It costs most sole traders about a dollar a day. Once you've done 10 paid jobs it becomes a condition of bidding, with at least 14 days' notice in the app.

Stripe Express, the same payouts system Uber and Airbnb use in Australia. Stripe verifies your ID and holds your bank details - Mowie never sees them. Money lands about 2 business days after the customer approves the photo (or 48 hours after the photo if they go quiet).

Always. We show a suggested bid built from the measured lawn, its condition and what's winning nearby; you bid what you like, and the customer chooses.

Approval is automatic after 48 hours if they go quiet. If they raise an issue you get first go at fixing it, and Mowie reviews within 24 hours. Payment isn't released until it's sorted, but you're never left waiting on silence.

Solo with decent gear, 8-12 maintained suburban lawns is a good day; past that, round density matters more than mowing speed. Travel is the killer - ten jobs within ten minutes of each other beat fourteen scattered across the north. That's why Mowie launches suburb by suburb: dense rounds, less windscreen time.
