Acreage mowing: when the lawn stops being a lawn

Somewhere past about 1,000 m² of grass, push mowers and per-visit quotes stop making sense. Ride-ons, slashers and hourly rates take over - and on Melbourne's northern fringe, where Doreen, Mernda, Whittlesea, Yarrambat and Kinglake-way blocks run from "big back yard" to a few acres, it's worth knowing which side of that line your place sits on.

What acreage work costs

• Ride-on mowing runs $80-120 an hour around Melbourne, machine included. A tidy half-acre (2,000 m²) of actual grass is typically 1-1.5 hours; a full acre more like 2-3, depending on trees, slopes and how long it's been.
• Slashing - for paddocks and grass past knee height - is priced per hour or per acre and costs less per square metre than mowing, because it's a rougher cut with a heavier machine. Once growth is past what a ride-on deck can chew, slashing first is the only sensible path.
• The house-yard-plus-paddock combo is the classic arrangement: the fenced house yard gets a proper mow and edges, the rest gets slashed a few times a year. Quoted as two different jobs, because they are.

Why it's hourly

On a suburban block, the variables are small enough to quote per visit. On acreage, the variables are the job: a wet winter can double the cutting time, obstacles (fruit trees, dams, septic fields, that trailer that hasn't moved since 2019) turn straight runs into embroidery, and growth between visits swings wildly with the season. Hourly with a realistic estimate up front is the honest structure - and it rewards keeping the visits regular, because a maintained block cuts in half the time of a neglected one.

Fire season is the real deadline

On the fringe, long grass is fuel. Councils in the growth corridors issue slash-your-block notices in late spring, and CFA guidance wants grass kept short around dwellings well before Christmas. The practical rhythm for most northern-fringe blocks: a solid cut in October as the flush takes off, again in late November-December for fire season, and as needed through autumn. Leaving it until the first fire-danger week means queueing with everyone else who left it - slashing contractors' Decembers are booked out for a reason.
