About Seaford
The name dates from 1913 and has two stories: councillor Sydney Plowman dropping the L from his hometown Sleaford in Lincolnshire, or Seaford in Sussex. The hotel opened in the early 1920s. About 1,500 people lived here after the war, on cheap land. Seaford East, low-lying swampy land subdivided in the 1930s, was built on from the mid-1950s, and the schools followed: Kananook primary 1958, Belvedere Park 1966, Seaford-Carrum high school 1967, Seaford North 1969 and Seaford Park 1979. The Mornington Peninsula Freeway opened in 1977 and EastLink in 2008, east of the wetland.
Kananook Creek runs parallel to the coast behind the Seaford Foreshore Reserve. The Port Phillip Authority's Seaford Experimental Project of 1972 restored the dunes. To the east lie the Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands, 305 hectares of the former Karrum Karrum swamp with river red gums up to 300 years old. Seaford East was low-lying and swampy when subdivided. The suburb is 11.9 square kilometres; St Kilda FC trained at Belvedere Park in 2010-11.
Seaford is Frankston City Council. The council does no mowing or spraying where a nature strip adjoins private property; the resident does the basic maintenance and pays for any planting, and the street trees are the council's to prune or remove. The light-green food and garden bin is emptied fortnightly on the opposite week to recycling and accepts grass and nature-strip clippings, 70 kg limit. It is opt-in and the council does not publish the charge.
