About Carrum Downs
The swamp was fed by Dandenong and Eumemmerring creeks and grew swamp tea-tree. It became a farming district, and Hugh Brown's Carrum potatoes came from here. A primary school opened in 1909 at Frankston-Dandenong Road and Bawden Street, with a post office on 1 November 1909. The Brotherhood of St Laurence settlement of the 1930s became an aged-persons village from 1945. Housing came in the 1970s-80s with AVJennings' Botany Park estate, and Botany Bush was redeveloped in the 1990s. The first shopping centre opened in 1984, a 40-shop drive-in centre in 1994 and Carrum Downs Plaza on Ballarto Road in 2008.
A linear park follows Boggy Creek. The Pines Flora and Fauna Reserve occupies the former vegetable research station and burned on 6 January 2018. Roads changed the suburb twice: EastLink in 2008 and Peninsula Link in 2013. The name comes from the Boonwurrung Karrum Karrum, said to mean boomerang, after the shape of the beach. The suburb covers 19.5 square kilometres and turned residential from the 1970s.
Carrum Downs is Frankston City Council, which does not mow or spray where a nature strip adjoins private property. The resident does the basic maintenance and street trees stay the council's. The food and garden bin has a light-green lid, is emptied fortnightly opposite the recycling week and accepts grass and nature-strip clippings up to 70 kg; it is opt-in, and the council pages do not show the charge.
