Lawn mowing in Carrum
Carrum sits on what was the Carrum Carrum Swamp. The Patterson Cut was formed in 1876 and the swamp was drained in 1879, after years in which the swamp opening was mostly only open in winter and heavy spring and summer rains flooded the properties on its edge.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Carrum lawn
- Between the river and Eel Race Road the ground was swamp; say whether your lawn stays wet in winter.
- Kingston's green bin is fortnightly; clippings go in it, get mulched in, or leave with the mower, and the listing should say which.
- If the block is close to the beach and the lawn dries out, ask for the cut left higher through summer.
Carrum lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Carrum?+
Carrum's guide runs $105-$150 for one cut of a 180 m² lawn. Each bid is priced on your own lawn's measured area, so a small lawn is quoted below that.
What does Kingston do on my nature strip in Carrum?+
It prunes the trees every two years and helps with hazards. The rest, mowing, watering and general upkeep, is the resident's. A resident may request a strip tree but not plant one, and anything else planted stays under 0.5 metres.
Do Carrum lawns still flood?+
Before the Patterson Cut, heavy spring and summer rains often flooded properties on the swamp's edge, and the drainage of 1879 was done to stop that. What a given block does today is another matter. If yours puddles, say so when you list; wet ground rules out a clean cut and a mower will wait a day.
About Carrum
The cut channels Dandenong Creek water into Port Phillip, and the only remnants of the swamp are the Ramsar-listed Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands. The railway was extended across the former swamp from Mordialloc to Frankston in 1882, and Carrum station opened with it, the first between the two. The post office followed on 1 February 1886, Carrum Swamp school in 1900, Carrum primary and St Aidan's Anglican in 1902, the bowls club in 1924, the surf life savers in 1925. The Borough of Carrum was created in May 1920 and became the City of Chelsea in 1929. Sewerage came in 1965. Population went from 847 in 1911 to 3,602 in 2011.
The terrain is sandy beach in front and drained swampland behind. The Patterson River is the northern boundary and Eel Race Road the southern, and the whole suburb is 1.5 square kilometres, small beside Bonbeach's 2.8 and Patterson Lakes' 4.2. Roy Dore Reserve, renamed in 1985 for a long-serving CFA captain, is the named open ground. The name is from an Aboriginal word describing a boomerang, referring to the swamp. Ground drained a century and a half ago may still hold water after a wet week; a lawn that does should be listed as such.
Kingston is the council. Mowing, watering and the general upkeep of the strip fall to the resident; council prunes the trees on the strip every two years, deals with hazards and mows nothing that is not one. What grows on the strip other than grass is kept under 0.5 metres and half a metre back from the gutter, and the trees are council property. Kingston's green-lid bin takes garden waste as a standard service and is emptied fortnightly, in the week recycling stays in, on garbage day.
