About Macleod
Macleod is a hill. The streets between the station and Bundoora climb, and the views west to the city and east to the Dandenongs come with lawns that slope. On the older estates - Strathallan, Golf Links, Dunvegan, the Victoria Cross streets - that means a terraced front lawn with a retaining wall and a back yard that runs downhill to the fence, under mature trees. Springthorpe is newer and flatter, with smaller lawns and a lot of common green space kept by the estate.
The soil here is not the basalt clay of the plains to the west; Macleod is on the older sedimentary hills of the north-east, which drain better and grow a better buffalo lawn under trees. Couch and kikuyu still do well on the sunny side of the ridge. Shade and leaf drop are the constants, and a mower who blows the paths clean makes the difference between done and done properly.
Macleod is mostly City of Banyule, with a Darebin edge. Banyule collects food and garden waste weekly - the best bin arrangement in the north for anyone with a lawn - and expects residents to keep the nature strip neat. Trains on the Hurstbridge line and three buses cover the transport; the Aberdeen Road shops from the 1950s are the centre.
