About Sunbury
W.J.T. 'Big' Clarke took up pastoral runs from 1837 and the Clarkes built Rupertswood in 1874, with its own railway platform. The post office opened on 13 January 1858; the industrial school of 1879 later became the mental hospital. Shire offices moved here from Bulla in 1956. A 1961-62 plan for a 40,000-person satellite town failed, but the first high school opened in 1962 and airport construction started nearby in 1966. Sunbury Square, a supermarket plus 43 shops, opened in 1989, and several schools went up in the 1980s and 90s. The Pop Festival ran from 1972 to 1975.
Jacksons Creek runs through the town to its junction with the Maribyrnong River, and two smaller creeks join it inside the township. Caloola, Emu Bottom, Craiglee and Rupertswood are on the Victorian Heritage Register, as are two of the railway bridges. The town covers 22.1 km² east of the Calder Highway. Sunbury sits in Hume City Council, and the council's nature strip policy leaves regular mowing, edging and weeding of the strip to the resident, with council stepping in only to make a hazard safe.
