Lawn mowing in Diggers Rest
Diggers Rest was where diggers on the road to Bendigo stopped: a hotel stood at the road junction by 1854, the railway station opened in 1859 and the post office on 18 June 1860. Harry Houdini made Australia's first officially recorded powered flight here on 18 March 1910.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Diggers Rest lawn
- The strip rules and the bin service differ a little between Melton and Hume, so name the council on the rates notice.
- On the rise, a block may fall away toward Jacksons Creek. Tell the mower which way and how steeply.
- Young turf: ask for the high cut and say the month it was laid.
Diggers Rest lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Diggers Rest?+
Diggers Rest guides $100-$145 per call-out, on 180 m² of lawn. Whether you are in the Melton or the Hume part makes no difference to the bid, which comes off your own block's aerial measurement.
Which council's nature strip rule applies in Diggers Rest?+
Whichever council your rates go to. Melton: the resident mows, weeds, levels and clears litter from the strip and the council stays off it. Hume: the resident mows, edges, weeds and clears litter on every side of the property under a policy re-adopted on 12 March 2024, and council only steps in to make a hazard safe. Neither mows it for you.
How should a new lawn on the rise in Diggers Rest be cut?+
High for two summers. The town sits on a slight rise that sheds water, and instant turf on it is still rooting: keep it near 60-70 mm, take a third off at the most, and let it thicken before it is brought down.
About Diggers Rest
The 1870s and 80s village had a general store, a weighbridge, a mechanics' institute and a chaff mill, and Caroline Chisholm ran a women's shelter. The primary school dates from 1874 and has been on its present site since 1990. The hotel burned in 2008. Aitken's Gap, also The Gap or Buttlejorrk, is a former township inside the locality, and the four Sunbury Pop Festivals were held on a 620-acre farm along Jacksons Creek between here and Sunbury. The population stood between 186 and 267 from 1891 to 1961, reached 1,795 in 2001, fell to 1,662 in 2011 and then jumped to 5,669 at the 2021 census.
The town is on a slight rise at 153 m, and the streams flow away from it; Jacksons Creek runs through the southern parts. Old Calder Highway passes through, close to the Calder Freeway. Three recreation reserves and the Holden Flora and Fauna Reserve are the open ground. A jump of 4,000 people in a decade means a good share of the lawns are young turf on that rise, still rooting in for two summers and cut high, so the age of the turf is the first thing to give.
Diggers Rest straddles the City of Melton and the City of Hume; your rates notice says which you are in. Both leave the strip with the resident. Melton wants regular mowing, weeding, litter, soil top-up and levelling, keeps its own mowers off strips, and asks for a landscaping application ahead of anything but grass. Hume's Residential Nature Strip Policy, re-adopted 12 March 2024, wants mowing, edging, weeding and litter picked up on every side of the property, caps planted vegetation at 400 mm, and reinstates soil rather than turf. Melton's green-lid FOGO bin is fortnightly at no extra charge; Hume's food-and-garden bin is also fortnightly, 140 L or 240 L, inside the waste charge from 1 July 2024.
