Lawn mowing in Lalor

Lalor was founded on 14 February 1947 by the Peter Lalor Home Building Co-operative - returned servicemen building their own houses - and laid out by Saxil Tuxen as a garden suburb between Merri Creek and Darebin Creek; War Service Homes took the scheme over in 1954.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Lalor lawn

  • Deep blocks, long side paths: a 21-inch push mower fits almost everywhere in Lalor, but check the gate if the house has been extended.
  • Unit developments on the old blocks share a driveway. Say which unit and whether the front lawn is common property.
  • Old thick kikuyu that has been mown short for years scalps easily in summer. A slightly higher cut from December keeps it green.

Lalor lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Lalor?+

Budget $100-$145 for a mow, edge and blow-down on an average 180 m² Lalor lawn. The original garden-suburb blocks often carry more lawn than that, and a unit courtyard much less. Quotes from local mowers are based on the measured area, not the guess.

Is nature strip mowing included in Lalor?+

If you ask for it. The City of Whittlesea requires residents to keep the nature strip mown and clear of weeds, and most mowers do it in the same visit.

Do mowers work around fruit trees and vegie beds?+

Yes, but it takes longer than an open lawn and the quotes reflect it. Describe what is in the yard when you list - a fig, a grapevine, raised beds - so nobody is surprised.

About Lalor

A garden-suburb plan from 1947 means wide streets, deep blocks and a lot of lawn per house. The original houses are weatherboard and brick veneer with a front lawn to the footpath, a nature strip, and a back yard that was meant for vegetables and a Hills hoist. Plenty of them are still that; plenty more have been rebuilt or split into two units, which is where the small courtyard lawns come from. The mix is why quotes vary more here than in a one-era estate.

The lawns are the north's usual kikuyu and couch on basalt clay, often decades old and thick. An established kikuyu lawn in Lalor does not need much beyond a regular cut, an edge along the concrete and the nature strip kept down. The fruit trees planted through the 1950s and 60s are still there in a lot of backyards, and mowing around a fig and a grapevine is slower than mowing an open rectangle.

City of Whittlesea: the nature strip is the resident's to mow, and the light-green-lid 240 L garden bin has been at every house since June 2026, emptied fortnightly. Lalor Plaza has been the shops since 1979, Lalor station is the rail link, and the City of Whittlesea Gardens are the suburb's public gardens.
