Lawn mowing in Thomastown

Thomastown grew from market gardens - John Honniball Thomas bought his 106 acres in 1848 - into a post-war suburb through the 1950s and 60s, and the houses from that boom are still most of what is here.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Thomastown lawn

  • Most Thomastown back yards have a concreted section. Ask for the edges to be blown off - it is part of a standard visit and makes the job look finished.
  • Older kikuyu lawns here thatch up. A lower first cut in spring followed by a fortnightly round handles it; the dethatching guide covers the heavy cases.
  • Split blocks with a unit at the back share the driveway. Say which lawn is yours.

Thomastown lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Thomastown?+

The model puts a typical 180 m² Thomastown lawn at $100-$145 per visit. Full-sized 1950s blocks with front and back lawns can run higher; a unit courtyard lower. The quotes you compare come from local mowers, privately.

Do I mow the nature strip in Thomastown?+

Yes - the City of Whittlesea puts nature-strip mowing on the resident or owner. Include it in your listing and it is done in the same visit.

What about the vegie patch and the fruit trees?+

Mowers trim around them, not through them, and a yard with a vegie patch and a lemon tree takes longer than an open rectangle. Mention what is in the yard when you list so the quotes allow the extra time.

About Thomastown

The 1950s and 60s brick homes north and south of High Street sit on full-sized blocks with a front lawn, a nature strip and a back yard that in Thomastown very often has a vegetable patch, a lemon tree and a concreted section with the clothesline. The lawn is usually kikuyu, forty years old and dense. It mows easily and it grows quickly; the slow part is edging around the concrete and trimming around the trees.

Edgars Creek runs through the suburb with a linear park along it, and the houses backing onto it deal with more leaf drop and the occasional damp corner. South of the suburb is the industrial belt along the M80, which has nothing to do with your lawn except that a lot of Thomastown's mowers are the tradies who work there.

City of Whittlesea rules: nature-strip mowing is on the resident, and the light-green-lid 240 L garden bin has been at every house since June 2026, emptied fortnightly. Thomastown station opened in 1889 and was rebuilt in 2011, TRAC is the aquatic centre and there are five ovals, but for mowing the relevant fact is that the streets are flat, wide and easy to park in.
