About Pakenham
The first pastoral run here was on Toomuc Creek about 1843; the Bourke and Neville families had settled Upper Pakenham from 1837-39. Runs were cut up for dairying through the 1850s-70s and orchards took the Toomuc Valley from the 1870s. New Pakenham grew beside the station, with a hotel in 1880, the shire headquarters from 1902 and a shire hall in 1912. Soldier settlement came in the 1920s and a consolidated school in 1951. Raleigh, Nestle and Simplot food processing dates from 1952. Electric trains arrived in 1975 and the Princes Freeway in 2007. Cardinia Road station opened in 2012, East Pakenham in 2024.
Lakeside drove the growth, with Heritage Springs and Cardinia Lakes alongside it, and Pakenham Central Marketplace opened in 2011. Toomuc Creek runs through, with a linear park in Pakenham West, and the south of the suburb is on the former Koo Wee Rup Swamp margins. The town is 101 m above sea level and gets 865 mm of rain a year. The suburb covers 85.9 square kilometres. A newly laid lawn wants a 60-70 mm cut for its first two summers.
