About Bentleigh
Stock runs gave way to market gardens in the early 1850s. A Methodist church stood on Centre Road from 1849, the district joined the Moorabbin Road District in 1862, and the Jasper Road post office opened on 1 July 1865 before moving to the station in 1882. Shops recorded in 1909 included two general stores and a bone mill. Bentleigh West primary opened in 1927, St Paul's in 1928, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College in 1938 and the high school in 1956. Patterson, with its own station and a post office from 1948, is a locality inside the suburb. The level crossing went in 2016.
The sandy soil was easily worked, and there were springs in several places, part of a chain of water courses running through to Cheltenham. Bentleigh is one of the market-garden localities of the sandbelt, and the sand is the Brighton Group that gives the Sandbelt its name; soils over it are very well drained and droughty in summer, with low fertility. Bentleigh sits at about 35 metres. Alnutt Park, Victory Park, Halley Park and Bentleigh Memorial Gardens are the open ground, and Centre Road carries more than 250 shops.
Glen Eira relies on property owners to maintain the nature strip next to their property, and its page spells out mowing, weeding and edging as well as keeping the strip safe and clear of rubbish. Street trees are the council's to plant and prune; residents may not touch them. Planting the strip needs a $50 permit, and a planting without one can be removed at the owner's cost.
