Lawn mowing in Brighton East
Farmers east of Henry Dendy's 1841 Brighton survey called their district Little Brighton from 1843, and it stayed market gardens and farms near South Road through the 1880s and 90s before the land between North and Centre Roads was cut into house blocks in 1922-28.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Brighton East lawn
- Tell the mower which council you are in. A Bayside address may have no green bin at all unless someone ordered one.
- If your lawn dries out fast in summer, ask for a higher cut through January rather than a short one that browns off.
- If you back onto Elster Creek in the northern section, say so, and whether the bank is fenced.
Brighton East lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Brighton East?+
Between $115 and $160 for one cut of a 180 m² lawn, in our model. Each bid is made off your own lawn's aerial measurement, so more grass than that comes in over the guide and less comes in under.
Who mows the nature strip in Brighton East?+
You do, on either side of the council line. Bayside says residents are required by law to maintain the strip while it manages the trees; Glen Eira relies on owners to mow, weed and edge it and keeps the street trees for itself. Add it to your listing and it is cut in the same visit.
Do I get a green bin in Brighton East?+
That depends which council you are in. On the Bayside side the food and green bin is optional and off the rates: $104.85 one-off for a 240 L or 120 L bin with a caddy, then emptied weekly. On the Glen Eira side the lime-green FOGO bin is a standard service, also emptied weekly.
About Brighton East
A Catholic school of 1848 was the forerunner of St Finbar's on Centre Road, and St Leonard's College opened on South Road in 1914, but the street pattern is a 1920s and 30s one. Gardenvale primary opened in 1922, the Hawthorn Road tram was pushed on from Glen Huntly to North Road in 1925, and the streets were complete by the late 1930s. The council golf course came in 1943 and Brighton High School in 1955. Nepean Highway, North Road, Thomas Street, South Road and Hampton Street are the boundaries.
Brighton East sits at about 23 metres. It falls inside the Melbourne Sandbelt, the triangle from Brighton down the coast to Frankston built on remnant sand dunes over the Brighton Group sands and gravels; soils over that sandstone run from sands to clays, so check which yours is. Elster Creek crosses the northern section on its way to the Elwood Canal. Dendy Park, one of Victoria's ten largest parks, is here, with Hurlingham Park and Landcox Park.
The suburb is split between Bayside and Glen Eira. Bayside says residents are required by law to maintain the nature strip while the council manages the trees; its lime-green food and green bin is optional, ordered for a one-off $104.85, and emptied weekly since July 2022. Glen Eira relies on owners to mow, weed and edge the strip, and collects its lime-green FOGO bin weekly as a standard service. Check which side of the line you are on before you count on a bin.
