Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Ormond lawn

  • Give the postcode with the street; Ormond carries both 3163 and 3204.
  • For a unit block's front lawn, say who pays and whether the courtyards behind are included.
  • Measure the gate. A standard mower wants 70 to 95 cm of opening; wider than that and the big deck fits.

Ormond lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Ormond?+

The model puts an Ormond lawn of that size, 180 m², somewhere in $110-$160 for one mow. A mower bids on what the aerial shows of your block, and a house lot with grass front and rear comes in above that while a unit's front patch comes in below.

Is the nature strip in Ormond my job?+

Under Glen Eira, yes; mowing, weeding and edging, and keeping it tidy and safe, all fall to the property owner. The street tree belongs to the council and stays untouched. A $50 permit covers a planting on the strip. List the strip alongside the lawn.

Can a unit development list its shared front lawn in Ormond?+

Yes. Half of Ormond's dwellings were row houses, flats or units in 2011 (49.8%), and the aerial measures a shared front lawn like any other. Say who is paying, whether the courtyards behind are included, and which of the two postcodes, 3163 or 3204, the block sits in.

About Ormond

The railway came through from Caulfield to Mordialloc in 1881 and the North Road station was renamed Ormond in 1897, after Francis Ormond, grazier and philanthropist. The Rosstown line from Oakleigh to Elsternwick crossed it about 700 m north of North Road. The primary school opened in 1891, the Uniting church in 1903, the girls' school in 1923 and the Catholic primary in 1924, but only 205 people lived here in 1921. By 2011 row houses, flats and units were 49.8% of the dwellings. A house block and the front grass of a unit development are traced as different outlines, so say which you have.

The suburb is 2 km² at about 42 m, south of the racecourse, and the six-hectare Ormond Park with its tennis courts became E.E. Gunn Reserve. Parts of it were run by the City of Caulfield and parts by the City of Moorabbin before Glen Eira took the lot in 1994, and the suburb carries two postcodes, 3163 and 3204. The old vineyard ground is history; say on the listing whether the back lawn stays soft in July, whether it cracks in February, and which side of the house the mower comes down.

Glen Eira's rule for the strip is that the property owner maintains it, mowing, weeding and edging all included, and keeps it safe, with the rubbish picked up. Street trees belong to the council, and residents keep their hands off them. The Nature Strip Planting Permit runs $50 for planting the strip, and one put in without a permit may be removed with the owner paying. The council empties the lime-green FOGO bin every week as a standard service; the kitchen caddy is free from the Town Hall.
