Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Hampton East lawn

  • Say whether your lawn goes brown in a dry February; if it does, a mower will leave it longer.
  • If the strip outside has a council tree on it, ask for trimming around the trunk and leave the pruning to Bayside.
  • Tell the mower whether the block is a house or one of the flats, and where the lawn is in relation to the street.

Hampton East lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Hampton East?+

Around $110-$155 is what a single cut of 180 m² guides at in Hampton East. The bid tracks the lawn area measured on your own block, which may be less than that once the house and drive are taken out.

Is there a green bin in Hampton East?+

Only if it was ordered. Bayside's is an optional bin, off the rates: $104.85 one-off for a 240 L or 120 L bin with a caddy, then emptied every week. General waste goes out fortnightly.

Why does my Hampton East lawn dry out so fast?+

The district is described as flat sandy soil, the sand belt that Moorabbin city built across in the 1950s to 70s, and sand holds little water. If yours is on it, cut higher through summer, never take off more than a third in one cut, and water deeply rather than often.

About Hampton East

Hampton East is a 1.4 square kilometre suburb developed mainly in the 1950s, on ground that belonged to the City of Moorabbin until Bayside was formed. During the 1950s to 70s Moorabbin city was Melbourne's burgeoning sand belt residential area, and the district's soil is described as flat and sandy. Whether your own lawn drains that way is another matter. The post office opened on 1 September 1947, closed in 1950 and reopened in 1956. Basterfield Park and its lake are the named open ground. The suburb sits about 32 metres up, bordered by Hampton, Bentleigh, Brighton East, Moorabbin and Highett.

The council is Bayside, which makes the strip outside a property the resident's legal responsibility and keeps the management of the strip trees for itself. Anything planted on the strip stays under 0.6 metres unless a planting approval says otherwise. There is no food and green waste bin on the rates: one is ordered at $104.85, paid once, in 240 or 120 litres with a kitchen caddy, and then emptied weekly, with general waste collected fortnightly since July 2022. A block that never ordered one has nowhere to put clippings but the mower's trailer.
