About Moorabbin
A Wesleyan church school opened in 1854 and a state primary replaced it in 1872; a post office was open from 1 September 1857 as South Brighton. The Road Board dates from 1862, the shire from 27 January 1871 and the city from 10 October 1934. Moorabbin station came in 1881 on the Caulfield-Frankston extension, and Patterson station in 1960, as the land between Bentleigh and Moorabbin filled with residential subdivisions. The airport opened in December 1949 and the new town hall in 1963. Moorabbin West primary ran from 1950 to 1992, the technical school opened in 1954, the Catholic primary in 1957 and Southmoor primary in 1963. Moorabbin Oval was St Kilda's football ground from 1965 to 1992.
The housing is predominantly three-bedroom red or cream brick detached houses built between the 1940s and the 1970s, the decades when Moorabbin city grew as Melbourne's sand belt residential area. The flat sandy soil gave large and stable sites, and the same sites drew factories: Gilbey's distillery in 1937, then Schweppes, Coca-Cola and Philip Morris, closed in 2014, with eastern Moorabbin industrial since the mid-1960s. The old City of Moorabbin was divided among Kingston, Glen Eira and Bayside in 1994, and the suburb itself is Kingston.
