About Hampton
Picnic Point on the foreshore was a resort from the 1850s, with two hotels and coffee gardens by the 1880s. The railway reached here in 1887 on its way from Brighton Beach to Sandringham, with a station first called Retreat after the Retreat Hotel. A public hall on Hampton Street followed in the late 1890s and a post office on 1 July 1909. The War Service Homes Commission put up about 300 houses after the First World War. Then the gardens were cut up. Over 100 shops stood on Hampton Street by 1933, and building ran on through the years either side of the Second World War.
The suburb runs four square kilometres from the foreshore reserve and the beach at Picnic Point up to the five sports reserves in its eastern part, with the Sandringham line through the middle and the shops along Hampton Street.
