Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Chelsea lawn
- Beside the Secondary Drain parklands, say whether the rear boundary is fenced and whether the ground there stays wet.
- A strip tree hanging low over the grass changes the gear a mower brings; note it, and leave the pruning to Kingston.
- Kingston empties the green bin every second week; a lawn cut on the off week may need clippings taken away.
Chelsea lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Chelsea?+
The guide for a standard cut of 180 m² in Chelsea is $105-$150. Bids follow the aerial measurement of the lawn you list, and a unit's lawn comes in under it.
Who is responsible for the nature strip in Chelsea?+
The resident. Kingston makes residents responsible for mowing, watering and maintaining nature strips, while the council handles hazards and gives the trees a prune every two years. A council mow happens only once the strip is a hazard. Include it in the listing to have it cut with the lawn.
My Chelsea lawn is next to the drain parkland. Anything to know?+
The Secondary Drain is the eastern boundary, with parklands, sports reserves and a pony club along it, and Bicentennial Park sits on a former tip a kilometre inland. Say whether the ground on your block holds water after rain, and whether the back boundary is fenced, because that sets the edging.
About Chelsea
The Frankston line cut through in 1882, and the station and post office opened in 1907. A state primary followed in 1912 and a Catholic primary in 1913, with churches of several denominations by the early 1920s. The Borough of Carrum of 1920 became the City of Chelsea on 8 May 1929, with a court house the same year and the Centenary clock in 1934; the city was sewered in 1965, got a city hall and library in 1973 and a Safeway in 1979, and merged into Kingston in 1994. Early holiday shacks gave way to post-war housing, and in the 1960s and 70s many older houses were demolished for single-storey units. The suburb counted 6,176 people in 2001 and 6,622 in 2011.
The long beach is overlooked by houses in a herring-bone street layout between the sea and Point Nepean Road. Away from the beach, along the Secondary Drain that forms the eastern boundary, there are extensive parklands, sports reserves and a pony club. Bicentennial Park, about a kilometre inland on a former rubbish tip, holds the Mount Chelsea adventure playground. Karrum Karrum was the Boonwurrung name. If yours is one of the 1960s units, say where the lawn is and how a mower gets to it.
Kingston's rule is that the resident does the mowing and watering of the strip and its general upkeep; council prunes the trees on it every second year and attends to hazards, and that is the extent of its mowing. The trees are council-owned. Other plantings are held under 0.5 metres and kept 0.5 metres off the kerb. The bin with the green lid takes clippings as a standard service, fortnightly, on the week recycling does not go out, garbage day.
