Lawn mowing in Chelsea Heights

Chelsea Heights stands on an ancient coastal sand dune that was once surrounded by the Carrum Swamp. Before the 1870s it was the Isles of Wannarkladdin, the only high land in the Carrum Carrum Swamp, and an 1866 hydrographic map printed the name.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Chelsea Heights lawn

  • If the lawn dries out on the dune, ask for a summer cut no shorter than it needs to be, and never over a third of the leaf.
  • Toward the wetland reserves on the western side, say whether the lawn holds water after rain.
  • Give the side gate width; 70 to 95 cm is standard, under 70 cm means a push mower.

Chelsea Heights lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Chelsea Heights?+

In Chelsea Heights a 180 m² lawn guides at $100-$145 each mow. The bid comes off the measured lawn on your own aerial, and a block with grass both sides of the house can measure more than that.

Does Kingston collect garden waste in Chelsea Heights?+

Yes, in the green-lid bin Kingston supplies as standard. It goes out every second week, the week recycling does not, on garbage day. On the off week a mow can overfill it, so decide whether clippings should stay in the bin or go with the mower.

Is Chelsea Heights really on a sand dune?+

Yes. The suburb is an ancient coastal sand dune, the only high land of the Carrum Carrum Swamp before it was drained. Sand sheds water where the old swamp held it, so a lawn up here may want a higher cut through summer and deep, infrequent watering, while one on the wetland edge may want a dry day. Say what yours does.

About Chelsea Heights

Grazing leases date from the 1850s. A primary school opened in 1890 as Carrum North, the land was subdivided and named Chelsea Heights in 1912, when the census counted 230 people, and the school took the suburb's name in 1964, the year residential development accelerated. A kindergarten, an infant welfare centre and shops followed. The suburb belonged to the City of Springvale before Kingston. Population was 5,252 in 2001 and 5,186 in 2011, across 3.2 square kilometres.

The dune is the point. Sand that stood above the swamp sheds water, so if your lawn dries out and browns off in a hot February, say so, and ask for it cut high. Extensive wetland reserves lie on the western side, with the Chelsea Heights hotel and business parks on the eastern side and neighbourhood reserves between; the Edithvale-Seaford wetlands are nearby. The Bayside Trail, about 43 km from Seaford north to Port Melbourne, passes through, and the shops are at the Wells Road and Springvale Road intersection. A block on the edge toward the wetlands may sit on lower ground than the dune; say which yours is.

The council is Kingston. A resident mows and waters the strip and keeps it maintained; Kingston owns the trees on it, prunes them every two years, and will mow a strip itself only once it has become a hazard. Low plantings are allowed to 0.5 metres, set that far in from the kerb. Garden waste has a standard bin, the green-lid one, emptied fortnightly, opposite the recycling week, on garbage day.
