Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Edithvale lawn
- Near the beach, where the dune was, ask for a taller summer cut if the lawn dries out; a short lawn browns.
- Toward the Secondary Drain, a lawn that stays soft after rain is worth flagging before the first visit.
- A back lawn reached only through the garage is a carry-through job; the listing should say whether there is side access.
Edithvale lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Edithvale?+
A 180 m² lawn in Edithvale is guided to $105-$150, visit by visit. The figure a mower bids is based on the area measured on your own block, above the guide for a big back lawn and below it for a courtyard.
Does Kingston maintain the nature strip in Edithvale?+
Not the grass. Kingston prunes the trees every second year and attends to hazards, and the resident mows, waters and maintains the rest. Council mows a strip only if it is hazardous. Add it when you list and the mower does both in one visit.
Is Edithvale beach sand under my lawn?+
Near the beach, yes. The foreshore was ultra pure fine white sand, and the dune behind it was bulldozed for sewerage in the 1960s, so a beachfront block is where the dune stood. Toward the Secondary Drain the ground is swampy, with the Ramsar wetland beyond. Sand wants height on the cut and deep water in summer; swamp ground wants a dry day.
About Edithvale
The primary school opened in 1913 as Aspendale and was renamed Edithvale in 1921; the wooden building burnt in 1930 and was replaced in red brick. The station opened in 1919, the post office on 20 April 1923, the Presbyterian church in 1925, with the Methodist and Anglican churches in Clydebank Road. Chelsea hospital opened in 1941 and later became an aged persons' hostel, and the bowls club dates from 1968. Shops, two banks and an estate agent stand along Point Nepean Road, with the boat club hall and the surf club near the beach. A new station came in 2021 with the Edithvale Road level crossing removal. Population was 4,820 in 2001 and 5,460 in 2011.
The beach was originally ultra pure fine white sand and has been degraded by coarser sand washed ashore during attempts to reclaim the beach further north at Aspendale in the late 1970s. When the beachfront properties were sewered in the 1960s the entire dune was bulldozed and all its native vegetation removed. Eastwards the ground is swampy toward the Secondary Drain, and beyond the drain is remnant wetland: the Edithvale wetland, with Seaford's 261 hectares, was Ramsar-listed in 2001. Chelsea public golf course and Edithvale Common are the named open spaces. Which end of the suburb you are at is worth a line, because a lawn on sand and a lawn on old swamp want different cuts.
Kingston leaves the strip's mowing, watering and upkeep to the resident and confines itself to hazards and a prune of the trees every two years; the trees belong to the council. A strip planted with anything but grass keeps it under 0.5 metres and 50 cm in from the kerb. There is a standard green-lid bin for garden waste, emptied fortnightly, alternating with the recycling, on garbage day.
