Lawn mowing in Elsternwick

Elsternwick took its name from Charles Ebden's house Elster, and the creek beside it became the Elster Creek. A village grew on the creek, proposed in 1851 and surveyed in 1856, and the creek later became the Elwood Canal.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Elsternwick lawn

  • Near Elsternwick Park or the old creek line, say whether the lawn stays wet for days after a downpour.
  • Measure the side path; a push mower is the only thing that fits under 70 cm.
  • Glen Eira's bin is weekly. If the hedge has already filled it, tick clippings taken away.

Elsternwick lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Elsternwick?+

Under the model a 180 m² Elsternwick lawn runs $115-$160, mow after mow. Mowers bid on the outline of your block from the aerial, so a lot with a long back lawn will quote above the figure and a courtyard well under.

Who mows the nature strip in Elsternwick?+

The property owner, under Glen Eira's rules, with the weeding and edging thrown in; the council keeps only the street trees for itself. The permit for a planting on the strip is $50. Add the strip to the listing and the lawn and strip get one visit.

Is Elsternwick Park still wet ground?+

The park was mostly swamp with the Elster Creek through it, and the creek is now the Elwood Canal. The park's golf course became passive open space in 2018. Your block is a separate question; if the lawn is soft for days after rain, say so; nobody wants to cut a wet lawn.

About Elsternwick

The railway to Brighton reached here in 1861, but at first it made the estates easier to reach rather than prompting any subdivision. By 1880 some large landowners began releasing land and the pace picked up through that decade; the Glen Huntly Road tram came in 1889 and the population stood at 6,790 by 1911. Whichever decade your house dates from, say if the lawn is newer than the house.

Elsternwick Park was mostly swamp that the Elster Creek ran through, and its golf course closed in 2018 to become open space; the park sits at Nepean Highway and Glen Huntly Road, on the old cricket ground. The suburb is 2.6 km² at about 26 m. Hopetoun Gardens keeps English cannons of 1866, and Rippon Lea's estate is on Hotham Street. The swamp was the creek line and the park. A block up toward Hotham Street may drain differently, so put what your own lawn does after rain on the listing. The tram to Point Ormond ran from 4 June 1915 to 22 October 1960; route 67 is what remains.

Elsternwick is City of Glen Eira. The owner of the property keeps the strip in front of it mown, weeded and edged, safe to walk on and clear of rubbish; the council owns the street trees and does not want them planted, pruned or removed by anyone but its own crews. A planting on the strip takes a Nature Strip Planting Permit at $50, or it may be removed and the owner billed. The lime-green FOGO bin goes out weekly, standard service, and the free kitchen caddy comes from Glen Eira Town Hall.
