Lawn mowing in Elwood
Elwood was swamp until the government drained it: reclamation of 65 hectares began in 1885, Elster Creek was straightened into the Elwood Canal in 1887-89, and the reclaimed land went on sale from 1913.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Elwood lawn
- Say whether your lawn sits wet after rain. Part of Elwood is drained swamp, and it helps the mower to know how yours drains.
- Under the London planes, ask for leaves raked or blown off before the autumn cut rather than chopped into the lawn.
- Port Phillip's kerbside FOGO bin only goes to properties with a garden. Check yours has one before listing clippings as binned.
Elwood lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Elwood?+
Our model puts a 180 m² Elwood lawn at $110 to $160 a visit. The aerial measurement of your own lawn sets the number, not the suburb; a smaller lawn comes in under the guide and a bigger one over it.
Does the City of Port Phillip mow nature strips in Elwood?+
No. The council says property owners or occupants maintain the strip, excluding the street trees, which it looks after itself. It only steps in where a strip poses a public health risk, and it prefers mediation to penalties.
Do I get a green bin in Elwood?+
Only if your property has a garden and space for another bin; Port Phillip's roll-out is hybrid and other properties use communal hubs. The kerbside FOGO bin is 120 L, emptied weekly with garbage and recycling, and charged at $90 on the 2026-27 rates notice.
About Elwood
Passengers off the typhus ship Glen Huntly came ashore at Point Ormond, then called Little Red Bluff, in the early 1840s and were kept in a quarantine station there. Land south of the point was surveyed and sold in 1850-51, a hamlet stood on the swampy ground by the mid-1860s, and the district joined the St Kilda borough in 1870. The St Kilda-Brighton electric street railway ran through from 1906 to 1957. Most of the houses went up between 1910 and 1930, a mix of Edwardian and interwar character. The primary school dates from 1917 and the high school from 1957.
Sixty-five hectares of the suburb is reclaimed swamp, drained by the canal that still carries Elster Creek across to the bay. Tell your mower whether yours holds water after rain. London planes stand along many streets. Elwood Beach takes up the southern edge, with Point Ormond Reserve and the canal mouth on the foreshore.
The council is the City of Port Phillip. It says property owners or occupants maintain their nature strip, excluding the street trees, and it steps in only where a strip poses a public health risk, with mediation before any compliance order. The FOGO bin is 120 litres as standard and emptied weekly on the same night as garbage and recycling. Only properties with a garden and space for another bin get one; other properties use communal hubs and caddies. The kerbside service is charged at $90 for 2026-27 on the rates notice.
