Lawn mowing in Caulfield
Caulfield in the mid-nineteenth century was swampy, low-lying ground, used as watering and pasture land by drovers walking stock from Gippsland to Melbourne. Racing started on a rough bush track in 1859, and the first Caulfield Cup was run in 1879.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Caulfield lawn
- If your back lawn meets the racecourse fence or a laneway, say how the mower gets to it.
- The bin is weekly here, so decide whether the clippings go in it or the mower takes them.
- The old swamp is a note on the district, not on your block; whether yours sets hard in February or stays soft in July is the useful detail.
Caulfield lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Caulfield?+
Somewhere inside $110-$160, mow by mow, on a 180 m² Caulfield lawn, going by the model. The number a mower bids comes from the measured outline of your block, and a block with grass at both ends measures more than that.
Do I have to keep the nature strip mown in Caulfield?+
Yes. Glen Eira relies on the owner to keep the strip beside the property mown, weeded and edged, and clear of rubbish, while the street trees stay with the council. Tick the strip too and the mower does it with the lawn on the same visit.
Was Caulfield really a swamp, and does it matter for my lawn?+
The area was swampy, low-lying ground in the 1850s and Paddy's Swamp became Caulfield Park. That is district history. What matters for the quote is how your lawn behaves now, so say whether it holds water after rain.
About Caulfield
The suburb today is the small square between Kooyong Road, Glen Eira Road, Glen Huntly Road and Booran Road, 1.5 km² at about 38 m. Crown allotments first sold in 1854. The station was built in 1879 and the line to Mordialloc opened in 1881; in 1882 the district was still market gardens, with about 182 hectares of orchards. Sewering was the worry of the 1890s and reticulated water reached most of the new estates by 1914. Which decade your own house dates from, and whether the lawn has been relaid since, is worth a line in the listing.
The ground was swamp before it was anything else. Paddy's Swamp became Caulfield Park, over Glen Eira Road in Caulfield North, and the main shopping area grew on its south side. The racecourse is the landmark. The old swamp says nothing about what your own block does after rain, so tell the mower; a lawn that stays spongy into the second day takes a different visit from one that drains overnight. Tram routes 64 and 67 serve the suburb, and the Glenhuntly tram depot and Caulfield Hospital are inside it.
Glen Eira took over from the City of Caulfield on 15 December 1994 and its rules are plain. Mow the strip, weed it, edge it, keep it safe and pick up the rubbish; that is the owner's side. The council's side is the street trees, which residents are not to plant, prune or take out. Planting the strip needs the $50 permit, and a planting put in without one can be removed and charged to the owner. The FOGO bin with the lime-green lid is emptied weekly under the standard service, so the clippings have a home, and the Town Hall hands out a kitchen caddy free.
