Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Caulfield North lawn

  • A lot cut from a mansion garden may still carry a big old tree; leaf drop changes the job, so mention it.
  • Around Caulfield Park, mention whether the lawn sits wet after rain; the park was a swamp, your block may not be.
  • Put the gate width on the listing; a push mower is all that fits under 70 cm, and 70 to 95 cm takes a standard one.

Caulfield North lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Caulfield North?+

A 180 m² lawn in Caulfield North comes to $115-$160 by the model's reckoning. Because the bid is built on the outline traced from the aerial, a lot cut from an old estate with lawn on three sides prices above it.

What does Glen Eira want done with the nature strip in Caulfield North?+

Mown, weeded, edged, and kept safe and free of rubbish, by the property owner. The street trees are off limits; the council plants, prunes and removes them, nobody else. Planting the strip takes a permit, at $50.

Does the swamp under Caulfield Park affect lawns nearby?+

Paddy's Swamp is under the park's 26 hectares, lake and all. The suburb's elevation is given as about 48 m, and a lawn two streets away may drain without trouble. Put on the listing whether yours stays soft after rain and the mower quotes for the lawn in front of them, not for the park.

About Caulfield North

Some of the house lots here were cut from those mansion grounds. Three tram lines arrived between 1911 and 1913. Labassa is the survivor, first built in 1862, extended in 1873 and refurbished in 1889 in the French Renaissance style. St Mary's Anglican dates from 1871, Shelford from 1898 and Caulfield Junior College from 1916. The suburb sits between Orrong Road, Dandenong Road, Kambrook Road and Glen Eira Road, 4.2 km² at about 48 m, and the post office opened on 26 March 1915.

Caulfield Park is the big fact on the ground, about 26 hectares of Victorian garden with a war memorial, a decorative lake and playing fields, laid over what was Paddy's Swamp. The park is where the swamp was. A block a few streets off may sit higher and drain fine, so say what yours does rather than assuming. Tram routes 3, 16 and 64 run through, Balaclava Junction is described as the only grand union of tram track left in the Southern Hemisphere, and the nearest stations are Caulfield and Balaclava.

The council is City of Glen Eira. It relies on property owners to keep up the strip, and it names the jobs, mowing, weeding and edging, plus keeping the strip safe and free of rubbish. Trees on the strip are council trees and residents leave them alone. A Nature Strip Planting Permit costs $50, and an unpermitted planting may be taken out with the owner charged for it. Emptying the lime-green FOGO bin weekly is part of the standard service; Glen Eira Town Hall supplies a kitchen caddy at no charge.
