Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Caulfield South lawn

  • On a clinker pair, say which side the mower comes down and whether the gate is under 70 cm.
  • If the back fence is on the old Rosstown Railway reserve, mention it; the mower will want to know what comes over it.
  • The weekly lime-green bin takes clippings. If hedge trimmings have filled it, ask for them taken away.

Caulfield South lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Caulfield South?+

Expect $110-$160 to mow 180 m² of Caulfield South lawn once, under the model. Your listing carries your own block's measured area and that is what the mower prices; an Edwardian lot with lawn at the front and the back often measures more.

Is the nature strip mine to mow in Caulfield South?+

Yes, under Glen Eira's rules, and edging and weeding come with it; the street tree stays the council's. Tick the strip when you list and the mower includes it in the visit rather than pricing it later.

Princes Park was a tip. Does that matter for my lawn?+

Only for the park. The landfill was turned into ovals and playgrounds after the middle of last century; your block is another matter. Tell the mower how your own lawn drains and whether it sets hard in summer.

About Caulfield South

The suburb runs from Glen Huntly Road down to North Road, between Kooyong Road and Booran Road, 3.3 km² at about 25 m, the lowest of the Caulfields. Houses went up from the early 1900s on. Say whether yours has lawn at the street only or at both ends. The Rosstown Railway once ran through, and its line across several suburban blocks is still public land; if your fence backs onto that reserve, say so.

Princes Park was a council landfill until the middle of the twentieth century, then made into parkland with ovals, pavilions and playgrounds. Brighton Cemetery is older than the Caulfield Roads Board, with about 70,000 interred. The mansion Glen Eira went to the Department of Defence in 1915 as No. 11 Army General Hospital and is now the Caulfield General Medical Centre. No station serves the suburb; trams 64 and 67 do, with Elsternwick, Glen Huntly and Caulfield stations nearby. How the lawn drains and how the mower gets round the side are the two things to put on the listing.

Glen Eira asks the owner to keep the nature strip cut, weeded and edged, and to keep it safe with no rubbish left on it. The street trees it reserves to itself; residents leave them alone. Planting the strip yourself takes the $50 Nature Strip Planting Permit, and an unpermitted planting can go, at your cost. Weekly collection of the lime-green FOGO bin comes as standard, so spring clippings are never stuck in a pile, and the kitchen caddy is handed out free at the Town Hall.
