About Cheltenham
Sand changes the lawn. Cheltenham's post-war blocks - the two-acre allotments cut into suburban ones - drain fast, warm up early in spring and dry out hard in summer, which is the opposite problem to the clay of the north. Couch and kikuyu love the sun and the drainage; buffalo does well too. What they all need is a higher cut and a deep water in January, and what they get from a good mower is a cut that leaves some leaf on rather than scalping the sand bare.
The blocks are flat or gently rolling, with a front lawn, a nature strip and a back yard on most, and townhouses and units on the redeveloped ones. Southland (1968), the two stations (Cheltenham from 1881, Southland from 2017), the Pioneers Cemetery from 1864 and the industrial edges are the landmarks; the golf courses - Cheltenham, the Sandringham links, Victoria - are why the sandbelt has its name.
