Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Highett lawn
- Name your council when you list: a Kingston green bin is standard and fortnightly, a Bayside one only exists if it was bought.
- If the block backs onto Highett Reserve or the ovals, say if the back fence is solid or open.
- A paved side path and a wide gate take the standard machine; a narrow or unpaved one does not, so both belong on the listing.
Highett lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Highett?+
$110-$155 is the Highett guide, 180 m², per visit. Bids are made on the lawn area the aerial finds on your block, and a block with grass at both ends can measure more than that.
Which council's nature strip rule applies in Highett?+
Both apply, by address. Bayside puts the strip on the resident by law and manages the trees. Kingston has residents mow, water and maintain it and prunes the trees on a two-year cycle, mowing a strip itself only when it has become a hazard. Your rates notice names the council.
How often is the green bin emptied in Highett?+
Weekly on the Bayside side, if you paid the one-off $104.85 to have a food and green bin at all. Fortnightly on the Kingston side, where the green-lid bin is a standard service collected in the off week for recycling, on garbage day.
About Highett
The station opened in 1881 with the Caulfield-Mordialloc line, but the town came slowly: 169 people in 1911, a post office on 17 November 1924, a hall in 1926, St Stephen's Anglican church in 1927 and a strip of about a dozen shops near the station by 1932. The Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation built a wing and fuselage factory here in 1939 and closed it in 1945. Substantial residential growth began in the 1950s, with a Catholic primary in 1952, the state primary in 1953 and the high school in 1956, then a library in 1969. The CSIRO research complex arrived in the 1950s, and a shopping centre and apartments began on its former land in 2011.
Four gasometers near Nepean Highway and Bay Road were the landmark until the gasworks exploded in 1952; Sir William Fry Reserve occupies the site. Highett Reserve and Turner Road Reserve are the other named reserves, and the eastern recreation space has three ovals and a pool. The suburb is 3.9 square kilometres, 2 km east of Port Phillip and about 38 metres up. Market gardening up to the war says the ground was worked, not what it is made of. Say what yours does after a wet week.
Highett is split between Bayside and Kingston; go by your rates notice for which. In Bayside the strip is the resident's to maintain by law and the trees are the council's, and its optional food and green bin costs $104.85 paid once and is emptied weekly. On the Kingston side residents mow, water and maintain the strip themselves, the council trims its trees every second year and steps in only for hazards, and the green-lid garden bin is standard, fortnightly, the opposite week to recycling.
