Lawn mowing in Croydon North

Croydon North began as Brushy Creek, a settlement on the creek with a cattle run in the 1840s, a hotel in 1855 and a village from 1860. Until urban growth began in the early 1980s its hills were covered with farms and orchards.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Croydon North lawn

  • On Birts Hill or Black Springs Hill, say how the lawn falls and whether steps or a wall separate the levels.
  • Backing onto Brushy Creek or Brushy Park reserve, say if the rear boundary is fenced and whether the low corner holds water.
  • The FOGO bin comes fortnightly. Decide before you list whether clippings go in it, are mulched in, or leave with the mower.

Croydon North lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Croydon North?+

Croydon North's guide comes to $100-$145 whenever a 180 m² lawn is cut. Hill blocks with a long trimmed edge sit at the top; the mower reads the lawn off your aerial and bids on that, not on the suburb.

Do I mow the nature strip in Croydon North?+

You keep it tidy; Maroondah owns it. Changing it needs the council's approval, and an approved planting becomes yours to maintain. The council plants the trees on the strip and may prune, modify or remove landscaping. Put the strip on the listing and the front visit covers it.

Does it matter whether my lawn is on the hill or by the creek in Croydon North?+

Yes. A lawn on Birts Hill or Black Springs Hill is cut across the slope with its low edge trimmed, and the trimming is the slow part of the job. A lawn near Brushy Creek may hold water at the low end after rain. Name which, and how the mower gets a machine onto the grass.

About Croydon North

Cobb and Co coaches from Kew stopped at Brushy Creek in the 1870s, the Brushy Creek school opened in 1878 and a church and post office followed. Yarra Road primary opened in 1924 for growth in the north-west, the Croydon North post office opened on 1 November 1925, and Dame Nellie Melba opened the timber Croydon North Hall on Exeter Road in 1927. The hills, Birts Hill and Black Springs Hill among them, made appealing home sites, and subdivision ran through the 1980s and early 1990s, with the main development put between the 1960s and the 1980s and newer subdivisions since. Shops line Maroondah Highway into Dorset and Exeter roads.

Brushy Creek runs through the suburb, and the suburb sits about 120 m up. Lillydale Shire bought rundown farmland north of Maroondah Highway in 1949 for open space, now Warrien Reserve. Hochkins Ridge flora reserve is in the north, and there is a Brushy Park reserve and neighbourhood parks between. Hill blocks and creek blocks are different jobs. On a hill the lawn falls and its low edge is trimmed; by the creek the question is whether the low end drains. Say which you have, and whether the turf is from the 1960s or a subdivision of the 1990s.

The council is Maroondah, and the nature strip out the front belongs to it. Residents keep it tidy and need approval before changing it; an approved planting becomes the owner's to maintain, and the council can prune, modify or remove landscaping. The council plants thousands of trees on strips each year. The lime-green-lidded FOGO bin goes out one week and the recycling the next; garbage is weekly.
