About Croydon
Land was surveyed in 1868. Sheep, dairying and sawmills came first, then orchards of apples, cherries, pears, peaches and plums. The single-track railway to Lilydale opened on 1 December 1882 with the station called Warrandyte, renamed Croydon on 1 August 1884; the post office came in 1883 and the school in 1888. Croydon was proclaimed a town in 1912 and had electric trains by 1925. Croydon High opened in 1958 and the Arndale centre in 1964, Victoria's first fully air-conditioned shopping centre. The Shire of Croydon split from Lillydale in 1961, became a city in 1971, and merged into Maroondah on 15 December 1994.
It is a big suburb, 14.1 square kilometres, and Brushy Creek forms the eastern edge. Croydon Market opened in 1920 and the golf course in 1926; Arndale followed in 1964. Population was 3,385 in 1947 and 20,780 by 2001. The old name says one thing about the ground: the grass was silvery-white when the graziers arrived. Whether a Croydon lawn drains or puddles today is something only its owner can say.
Maroondah City Council owns the nature strip and asks residents to keep it tidy; you cannot change it without approval, and if the council approves a planting the upkeep is yours from then on. The council puts thousands of trees on nature strips each year and keeps the right to prune or remove landscaping.
