Lawn mowing in Mooroolbark
The name Mooroolbark is usually given as red earth, or as great water and place. John Gardiner leased the land between Brushy Creek and Olinda in 1837, the station opened in 1887, and the dairy farms were sold for houses through the 1960s, with about 9,000 people here by 1970.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Mooroolbark lawn
- Near the station or out past Five Ways? Name the nearest of Hull, Manchester, Cambridge and Lincoln roads and the mower knows the round.
- A lawn that has gone a month in spring is heavy going; say when it was last cut.
- An 80 L FOGO bin fills on one spring cut; if yours is the small one, ask for clippings taken away.
Mooroolbark lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Mooroolbark?+
Around $100-$145 is the model's number, each visit, for 180 m² of Mooroolbark lawn. The measurement behind the bid is your own block's, traced over the aerial, so a bigger back lawn can quote above it.
Who keeps the nature strip in Mooroolbark?+
Not the council. Yarra Ranges runs no mowing of strips; if a complaint is confirmed as a fire hazard or a vision obstruction it slashes once, and in its own words that is not mowing. It prefers indigenous plants on the strip and bans artificial turf. Put the strip in the listing and the mower cuts it on the same visit.
Can I put the clippings in the bin in Mooroolbark?+
Yes, in the FOGO bin, the one with the lime-green lid, which takes grass clippings, garden clippings, weeds and branches and is emptied once a week. The service is compulsory and the bin is charged by size, from $143 for 80 L to $201 for 240 L in the 2026-27 year. Extra FOGO bins can be ordered.
About Mooroolbark
The pre-war subdivisions sit near the station. Early in the 1920s the landscape designer Edna Walling bought land off Pembroke Road and laid out Bickleigh Vale, a 10-hectare garden-suburb of 15 houses that is on the Victorian Heritage Register; she stayed until 1967. The schools date the growth that followed: a technical school in 1962, Pembroke in 1965, high schools in 1968 and 1973, Manchester in 1970, Mooroolbark East in 1972, Bimbadeen Heights in 1976, Billanook College in 1980, Rolling Hills in 2011. The shopping centre near the station opened in 1971. Population went from 403 in 1933 to 14,343 in 1981 and 20,689 in 2011.
Most of the suburb drains to Brushy Creek, a Yarra tributary that runs almost entirely through built-up land, and the ground is about 93 m up. Red earth is what the name is commonly taken to mean, and that is as much as anyone can tell you about what sits under a given street, so say if your lawn bakes hard in February or stays soft in July. Hookey Park sits by the library at 7 Station Street, the shops are on Brice Avenue and Manchester Road, and Hull, Manchester, Cambridge and Lincoln roads meet at the Five Ways roundabouts, which is a handy way to tell a mower which part you are in.
Yarra Ranges is the council. The strips outside private property get no council mowing, there being no program for it, and it will at most send a slasher once after a complaint confirms either a fire hazard or blocked vision at a corner. Low plantings under a metre and gravel toppings pass; artificial turf and hard paving do not. The three bins are compulsory for any residential collection. Garden and food waste goes in the FOGO bin with the lime-green lid, collected weekly, and the bin is charged by size in 2026-27: $143 for 80 L, $157 for 120 L, $201 for 240 L, plus the $136 base charge. Rubbish and recycling are fortnightly.
