Lawn mowing in Kilsyth
Kilsyth lies in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges between Mooroolbark and Boronia, predominantly on cleared land that was orchards. The village grew on Mount Dandenong Road, the route between Croydon station and the Ranges, with a post office from 1900 and a school from 1910.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Kilsyth lawn
- The strip rule and the bin week change at the Maroondah line, so the council on your rates notice comes first.
- On a hillside block, say how the lawn falls and whether there are steps or a retaining wall between levels.
- Old orchard ground. If a fruit tree is still on the block, say so, and ask for windfall cleared before the cut.
Kilsyth lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Kilsyth?+
The guide for Kilsyth is $100-$145, worked on a lawn of 180 m². A hillside lawn with a long trimmed edge quotes toward the top of that; the mower bids on the grass traced on your aerial rather than on a suburb average.
Who sets the nature strip rule in Kilsyth?+
For most of the suburb, the Yarra Ranges Shire, and its rule is that it does not have a program for mowing nature strip grass outside private property. It will do a once-off slash after a complaint if an inspection confirms a fire hazard or a vision obstruction, and it says that is not mowing. Its FOGO bin, with the lime-green lid, is weekly, and the three-bin service is compulsory. On the Maroondah part the council owns the strip, residents keep it tidy, any change needs approval and the FOGO bin is fortnightly. Your rates notice says which you are.
Is Kilsyth hilly?+
Kilsyth is in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, on cleared orchard land, and the early houses were weekenders and hillside retreats. How much of that slope is on your own block is the useful fact. Say how the lawn falls, whether a machine can be walked onto it, and what the low edge meets, and the quote will match the work.
About Kilsyth
The post office opened on 22 November 1900 and the first school in April 1910, now Kilsyth Primary. Growth came as weekenders and hillside retreats were built, and the count stood at about 1,500 by 1954. The later schools mark the suburban years: Pembroke, now Yarra Hills Secondary, in 1970, Kilsyth East Primary in 1971, Gladesville Primary in 1974 and St Richard's in 1985. An industrial area runs along Canterbury Road from Liverpool Road to Dorset Road, with Eastwood Golf Club on Liverpool Road. Shops are at the Churinga and Kilsyth centres and on strips along Colchester Road, Collins Place and Hawthory Road. Why the Scottish name was chosen, nobody has found out.
The early houses were weekenders and hillside retreats, so some of the ground slopes. Kilsyth South, next door, falls from undulating land to flat land in the west between Canterbury Road and Dandenong Creek; Kilsyth proper sits about 113 m up on the old orchard ground. Elizabeth Bridge Reserve on Durham Road has a lake, a playground and a community centre, and the Centenary Pool is on Hawthory Road. A lawn on a fall is cut across the slope and trimmed along its low edge, and a lawn on the flat is a straight run. Say which yours is, whether an old fruit tree still drops on it, and whether the mower can drive onto it or has to carry a machine.
Most of Kilsyth is in the Yarra Ranges Shire, and the shire says it does not have a program for mowing nature strip grass outside private property. What it offers is a once-off slash where a complaint is raised and an inspection confirms a fire hazard or a vision obstruction, and it says a once-off slash is not mowing; nothing on its pages assigns the strip to residents in so many words, and no permit is mentioned for planting one, with indigenous plants preferred. The FOGO bin has a lime-green lid and is collected weekly, rubbish and recycling fortnightly, and the three-bin service is compulsory; a FOGO bin of 80, 120 or 240 L is $143, $157 or $201 a year in 2026-27, on top of a $136 base charge. The rest of Kilsyth is Maroondah, where the council owns the strip, residents keep it tidy and need approval to change it, and Maroondah's lime-green FOGO bin comes every second week, opposite the recycling, with garbage weekly. Your rates notice says which council you pay.
