Lawn mowing in Lilydale

Lilydale was surveyed in 1860 by Clement Hodgkinson on the miners' track to the Woods Point goldfields, and within two years it had a post office, a store, a butcher and a hotel. The Lillydale shire, spelt with two l's, was created on 16 February 1872 and folded into Yarra Ranges in 1994.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Lilydale lawn

  • New turf at Kinley? The month it was laid tells the mower to cut it high while it settles.
  • Lilydale is 29 square kilometres; give the nearest cross street and say if you are near the station, the lake or out toward the vineyards.
  • Weekly FOGO here, so clippings can go in the bin every cut; choose that when you list unless you want mulch.

Lilydale lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Lilydale?+

Our model has 180 m² of Lilydale lawn costing $100-$145 a single cut. An older town block with lawn at both ends can run above that, and a Kinley courtyard below; the mower bids on the shape traced over your own aerial.

Will Yarra Ranges mow the nature strip in Lilydale?+

No. The council says it does not have a program for mowing nature strip grass outside private property. The one exception is a once-off slash where an inspection confirms extremely long, very dry grass or an obscured intersection, and it is explicit that a slash is not mowing. If you want the strip cut, list it with the lawn.

What size FOGO bin do I get in Lilydale?+

Whichever you order: 80, 120 or 240 L, with 80 L the default on a new property. FOGO is compulsory, emptied every week, and charged per bin, $143 for the small one up to $201 for the biggest in 2026-27, plus the $136 base. Grass clippings, weeds and branches all go in; pet waste does not, because the bins are hand-sorted.

About Lilydale

De Castella Street became the civic centre with a court house in 1876, a Baptist church in 1881 and the shire hall in 1889; the railway came in 1882 and Lilydale was the change point for Healesville and Warburton. Growth stayed slow, 2,199 people in 1947, then 9,502 in 1991 and 15,649 in 2011, so a good part of the town is younger than 1991. The newest houses are at Kinley, the estate on the Cave Hill limestone quarry site at 4 Melba Avenue that David Mitchell, Nellie Melba's father, once ran; Lilydale Toppings, the ground cover, took its name from the town.

Olinda Creek rises in the Dandenong Ranges and runs through the suburb to the Yarra, and Lillydale Lake has a wetlands environment beside it. Vineyards lie to the north. The suburb covers 29.2 square kilometres at about 115 m, so a Lilydale address can be a town block near the station, rebuilt in November 2021 with the line raised over Maroondah Highway, or something a good way out. New turf at Kinley is a different cut from a lawn that has been there since the 1970s: it is cut higher and less often while it knits in. Say when yours went in.

Yarra Ranges Shire says it does not have a program for mowing nature strip grass outside private property; where a complaint brings an inspection that confirms a fire hazard or a blocked sightline it will do a once-off slash, and it says a slash is not mowing. Indigenous plants are preferred on the strip, ground covers and low shrubs under a metre are allowed, gravel toppings can replace the grass, and artificial turf, hard paving and irrigation are banned. The three-bin service is compulsory. FOGO, lime-green lid, is emptied weekly, in 80, 120 or 240 L, and charged per bin at $143, $157 or $201 a year in 2026-27 on top of a $136 base charge.
