Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Skye lawn

  • Name the estate and roughly when the lawn was laid. A lawn from 2005 and one from last spring are cut at different heights.
  • Along the eastern edge, say whether the block is an estate lot or acreage; a paddock is a different machine and a different quote.
  • Frankston's green bin is opt-in. If you have not taken one, ask for the clippings mulched back into the lawn.

Skye lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Skye?+

Our model gives $100-$145 a visit for a 180 m² Skye lawn. The lot is measured from the aerial when you list, and the bid is on that figure, not the suburb average.

Who looks after the nature strip in Skye?+

The resident. Frankston City Council carries out no mowing or herbicide where a strip adjoins a private property; any planting there is at the resident's cost, and the street trees are the council's alone to plant, prune or remove. Tick the strip too; it is cut with the lawn.

How high should a new Skye estate lawn be cut?+

Leave it at 60-70 mm for the first two summers and take no more than a third off the top in any one pass. Most of Skye's estates went in from 2005 onwards and the streets off Wedge Road are still going up, so give the mower the year yours was laid.

About Skye

Farm settlers of the 1850s from the Isle of Skye gave the place its name, and the shared church of the 1860s and the school of 1873 served a village that never grew past occasional land sales. The name went to Lyndhurst after 1894 and took 70 years to return to the primary school; the post office was renamed Skye in 1964 and closed in 1972. A couple of houses from the 1890s still stand. A residential area was created in the 1980s north of the old village subdivision, and by then the suburb was urban housing in the west and small farms in the east. Then the estates: Skye Valley, Lady Emily and Edinburgh Drive, Darnley Drive, Rangeview Drive, most of them built from 2005 onwards, and Wedge Road still under construction.

The census gives the pace: 231 people in 1966, 3,175 in 2001 and 8,088 in 2021, so most of the growth is this century. A lawn laid in the last couple of summers is still cut high. The Carrum Downs bushfire of January 2018 threatened Darnley Drive and Skye Valley. East of the built area a large tract lies outside the growth area, semi-rural, a green wedge toward Cranbourne West, so a block on that edge can be a paddock rather than a lawn. Say what your own lawn does after rain.

Skye is Frankston City Council, though the postcode is still Cranbourne's 3977. Where the nature strip adjoins a private property the council does no mowing or spraying; the resident provides the basic maintenance, and the street trees stay the council's to plant, prune and remove. The food and garden bin, light-green lid, takes lawn and strip clippings, 70 kg at most, and goes out fortnightly on the week the recycling does not; it is opt-in and the charge is not published. Western Port Highway bounds the suburb on the east and Peninsula Link runs to the west.
