About Langwarrin
The run had shrunk to a 7,000-acre estate by the 1880s. A 223-hectare military reserve was acquired in 1886, held volunteer camps from 1888 to 1910 and an internment camp and hospital in the First World War, closed in 1980 and became the heritage-listed Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve in 1985. The Stony Point railway opened in 1889 with the station opposite the reserve. An 1887 speculative township failed by 1895; the school reopened in 1907 about 3 km east of the station. Cruden Farm dates from 1928, the Anglican church from 1938.
Houses spread from the western edge through the 1960s. McClelland Gallery opened in 1971, Elisabeth Murdoch College in 1974 and the Gateway shopping centre in 1985, with Langwarrin Park primary in 1989 and Woodlands about 1996. The suburb moved from the City of Cranbourne to Frankston in December 1994. Valley Road, Dandenong-Hastings Road, Robinsons Road and the Mornington Peninsula Freeway bound it, 23.7 square kilometres, and the population went from 175 in 1911 to 21,371 in 2011.
Langwarrin is Frankston City Council. The council does not mow or spray where a nature strip adjoins private property; the resident does the basic maintenance and pays for any planting, while street trees are the council's to plant and prune. The food and garden bin has a light-green lid, is emptied fortnightly opposite the recycling week and takes grass and nature-strip clippings, 70 kg limit.
