About Frankston South
The railway reached Frankston in 1882 and large holiday estates followed. Walter Burley Griffin's Gumnuts cottage went up on Olivers Hill about 1920; Russell Grimwade's 45-hectare Westerfield in 1924. The first Australian Scout Jamboree was held here over 1934-35, and its grandstand stood until it burned on 12 February 2008. Overport primary opened in 1957, Frankston High School moved to Towerhill Road in 1958 and the post office opened on 27 October 1958. Derinya primary followed in 1971, Village Baxter in 1974 and the technical school that became Mount Erin College about 1976.
Sweetwater Creek comes down from Mount Eliza through the Sweetwater Creek Nature Reserve at the centre of the suburb and into Frankston Reservoir, with linear parks along it. Paratea Park keeps intact grassy woodland. The terrain is hilly, with views over Port Phillip. A sloping lawn is trimmer work along the bottom fence, so say how much yours falls. The suburb covers 14.8 square kilometres.
Frankston City Council does not mow or spray where a nature strip adjoins private property. The resident does the basic upkeep, mowing and sweeping, and pays for any planting; street trees are the council's alone. The food and garden bin has a light-green lid, is emptied fortnightly on the opposite week to recycling and takes grass and nature-strip clippings up to 70 kg.
