About Mount Eliza
Canadian sawmillers worked Canadian Bay and James Davey worked Daveys Bay. Holiday mansions followed: Manyung in the 1860s and Sunnyside in 1867-70, then Trawalla in 1871. St James the Less was built from local granite in 1865, and the Daveys Bay Yacht Club dates from 1909. Ranelagh came with its own club and beach. Toorak College opened in 1928 and the state primary in 1929; the village shops at Canadian Bay Road and Mount Eliza Way were mostly built in the 1950s-60s. Peninsula Grammar opened in 1961 and the high school in 1975. The population was 41 in 1921 and 17,248 in 2011.
Mount Eliza sits on granitic rises; St James the Less was built from that local granite. Earimil Creek runs through linear parkland, and a regional park with a quarry lake occupies the former tip. Six creeks are named: Kackeraboite, Manyung, Ballar, Earimil, Gunyong and Manmangur. The coast on Port Phillip has four named beaches: Daveys Bay, Canadian Bay, Sunnyside North and Half Moon Bay; the Morning Star estate covers 63 hectares at Sunnyside. The suburb is 23 square kilometres.
Mount Eliza is Mornington Peninsula Shire. The Shire puts the nature strip on the homeowner or tenant - regular mowing and edging, as well as weeding and litter - and maintains only the street trees it plants; a permit is needed for any landscaping or tree removal, and items left on the strip without a hard-waste booking are illegal.
