Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Warrandyte lawn

  • On a gorge block the way from the road to the lawn can be a flight of steps, and steps rule out the wide machine.
  • A lawn open to the State Park bush gets bark and leaf on it. Ask for a blow-down before the cut, and say if the fence is open or closed.
  • The green bin is weekly in Manningham, so clippings can go in the same week; say that when you list, or ask for mulching.

Warrandyte lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Warrandyte?+

Warrandyte's figure in the guide, $105-$155, assumes 180 m² of lawn, and a hillside lawn with a long trimmed edge quotes toward the top of it. Bids are built from the lawn traced on your aerial, not the size of the block.

Does the council mow the nature strip in Warrandyte?+

No. Manningham's Nature Strip Guide 2023 says renovation and proactive maintenance of strips are not council work; it relies on what it calls the established community expectation that the household mows, weeds, picks up litter and levels the surface, and every strip tree is the council's for its lifetime. Anything planted on it stays under 500 mm, or 300 mm near an intersection.

My block is on the slope down to the river. Does that change the mow?+

Yes. A lawn that falls away is cut across the slope and its low edge is trimmed, so the job is more trimmer than mower. Say which way it falls and how steeply, whether there are terraces or retaining walls, and whether the machine can be walked down or has to be carried. The mower prices the trimming as well as the grass.

About Warrandyte

An Anglican school opened in 1856, the post office on 1 August 1857, and a bridge for the Caledonia diggings washed away in 1863; the 1875 replacement lasted until 1955. The mechanics' institute opened in 1882 and the Grand Hotel in 1896. South Warrandyte, undulating and with better soil, carried orchards, mainly apples, pears, lemons and strawberries, and the eastern bank of Mullum Mullum Creek once had orchards spilling over from East Doncaster. Heidelberg School painters worked here, Clara Southern and Walter Withers among them. The river flooded in 1934. Black Friday, 13 January 1939, destroyed 168 houses, and there were fires again in 1962 and in February 2014.

The gorge sets the ground. Mullum Mullum Creek is the western boundary, the river the northern one and Jumping Creek with Anzac Road the eastern, and the streets sit about 113 m up with the mineshaft and tunnel ruins of the goldfield still in Warrandyte State Park. The park runs 8 km along the river to Wonga Park and takes in Pound Bend, Fourth Hill and Whipstick Gully; Currawong Bush Park and Stiggants Reserve are two of the others. A lawn on a slope is cut across it with the low edge trimmed by hand. Say how steep yours is, whether bush meets it, and what the bush drops on it.

The council is Manningham. The 2023 Nature Strip Guide says the council leaves the strip to the household by long-standing community expectation, lawn mowing, weeding, litter and levelling included, and does not renovate or proactively maintain strips itself; the trees on the strip are the council's for their lifetime, and plantings need approval and a 500 mm limit, 300 mm near intersections. Clippings go in the green-lid bin, which went weekly on 3 July 2023; the garbage and the recycling alternate fortnightly.
