Lawn mowing in Wonga Park

Wonga Park was a grazing property where the 1867 Melbourne Cup winner was trained, named for Simon Wonga, a Wurundjeri elder. The land company subdivided it after 1889, and the count was still 789 in 1986 before it rose to 3,833 by 2011.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Wonga Park lawn

  • Name your council when you list. Wonga Park is split three ways, and the bin week and the strip rule change at the boundary.
  • On a bush block, trace only the grass. The mower bids on the lawn, and a wide machine needs a 95 cm way in to reach it.
  • A lawn open to the State Park or the creek gets a blow-down before the cut; say what falls on it.

Wonga Park lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Wonga Park?+

$105-$150 is the Wonga Park guide, set on 180 m² of lawn. Bush blocks here are large and the lawn may be a small part of one, so the traced grass sets the quote and a lot of trimmer edge against bush pushes it up.

Who looks after the nature strip in Wonga Park?+

Depends on the council. Manningham, which covers most of the suburb, leaves mowing and weeding of the strip to the household and keeps the trees; Maroondah owns its strips, expects them kept tidy and needs approval for any change; in the Yarra Ranges portion the shire has no program for mowing strip grass outside private property and does a once-off slash only where a fire hazard or vision obstruction is confirmed. Check the rates notice, then add the strip to the listing.

How is a Wonga Park bush block priced?+

By the grass, not the land. Lots here are large and much of a block can be bush, so trace the mown area on the aerial and say where it stops. A lawn with a long edge against bush or a fence line under trees is trimmer work, and the mower prices that time on top of the mowing.

About Wonga Park

Until the 1890s this was part of Mooroolbark. An insurance company acquired the property in 1889 and the Wonga Park Land Co. cut it up; about 1893 some 20 members of an Eight Hours Pioneer Memorial Association took small holdings on a former timber reserve north of Launders Avenue and Toppings Road. The district was a mixture of orchards, grazing runs and timbered land, and most of the small properties were started on money from the firewood cut while clearing. The school opened in 1895 and the post office in 1902, the hall in 1908. Lord Clifford's Yarra Brae hosted the first Pan Pacific Scout Jamboree in 1948 and is now the Clifford Park campsite. Housing followed the Croydon and Mooroolbark subdivisions along Maroondah Highway.

Jumping Creek is the western boundary and the Yarra the northern, with Warrandyte State Park along that edge; Brushy Park and Old Homestead roads close the east and Holloway Road the south. The zoning is low-density residential, with large lots and bush blocks, and the ground sits about 105 m up. Beyond the word timbered, nothing written about the suburb gives a slope or a soil, so the listing has to carry it: how much of the block is mown grass, whether the lawn is one level or several, what the trees drop on it, and how far the mower has to walk a machine from where it can park.

Three councils meet here. Most of Wonga Park is City of Manningham, where the council does no proactive maintenance of strips and the owner or resident mows, weeds and levels them by established expectation, with a green-lid FOGO bin emptied weekly since 3 July 2023. The Maroondah part is council-owned strip that residents keep tidy and cannot change without approval, with a lime-green-lid FOGO bin on a fortnightly round. The Yarra Ranges part follows the shire, which says it does not have a program for mowing nature strip grass outside private property, and its FOGO bin, lime-green lid, is weekly. Your rates notice tells you which of the three you are.
