Lawn mowing in Park Orchards
Park Orchards was drawn up in 1925 as the Park Orchards Country Club Estate, 600 acres of orchard country laid out by Saxil Tuxen and George Miller in the circular manner of the Griffin estates. The last blocks were not sold until the early 1990s.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Park Orchards lawn
- Trace the lawn, not the block. On a lot this size the grass may be a fraction of the land, and the bid follows the grass.
- Pines went in twice, as windbreaks in 1902 and for timber in the Depression. Under one, ask for needles blown off before the cut.
- Check which council your rates go to. Manningham's green bin is weekly; the Maroondah portion's FOGO bin is fortnightly.
Park Orchards lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Park Orchards?+
Take $110-$155 as the Park Orchards guide, worked for 180 m² of lawn. Lots here are large, so the traced lawn area on your aerial decides the quote, and a large lawn on a bush block prices above the guide by its size, not by the suburb.
Which nature strip rule applies in Park Orchards?+
Two councils, so two answers. Manningham, which covers most of the suburb, leaves mowing and weeding of the strip to the household and does no proactive maintenance; the trees on it are the council's. On the Maroondah portion in the south the strip must be kept tidy and cannot be changed without approval. Your rates notice settles which applies.
Does a Park Orchards bush block get mown like a suburban lawn?+
The grass does; the bush does not. Petty's 1902 orchard blocks were cut with pine windbreaks and natural bush, and the suburb has kept a bushland character since, so a large lot here may be lawn near the house and bush beyond. Say where the lawn stops, what drops on it from the pines or the bush, and whether a wide mower can be driven onto it or a push mower has to be carried.
About Park Orchards
Tom Petty, an orchardist, bought 559 acres here in 1902 and cut it into 80 orchard blocks with pine windbreaks and natural bush. Two South Melbourne timber merchants, Sharp and Taylor, bought 600 acres in 1925 and launched the country club estate with a Spanish Mission clubhouse, The Chalet, built about 1929. The Depression stopped it. About 30 lots sold, the golf course ran into the 1930s, and the owners planted pines for timber instead. The Army took the Chalet in 1944 for a school for interpreters and a wireless group camp of 400. Edments Ltd bought the estate in late 1946, development picked up in the late 1950s, the post office followed on 1 November 1959 and the primary school on 14 March 1961.
The place has kept its bushland character, and the house lots are described as large, the smallest more than 35 metres by 60 metres. The ground is about 134 m up. How much of a lot that size is lawn, and how much is bush or pines, is the owner's to say. The 100 Acres, 41 ha of natural bushland north of Petty's old orchards with walking tracks and four dams, is the main reserve, with Park Orchards Reserve and Domeney Reserve as well. The suburb is inside a Green Wedge, and the council heritage-listed the Chalet in 1994. Say how much of your block is grass and where the mower can get onto it.
Most of Park Orchards is City of Manningham, and a southern portion is Maroondah. Manningham does no proactive maintenance on nature strips and relies on the owner or resident to mow, weed and keep the surface level; its green-lid FOGO bin is a weekly one, since 3 July 2023. Maroondah owns its strips, asks residents to keep them tidy, requires approval for any change, and empties its lime-green FOGO bin fortnightly, in the week the recycling stays in. Your rates notice says which of the two you are.
