About Kalkallo
Settlement started in 1835-40 on Wurundjeri-willam country, with an inn by 1841 and a bluestone St John's Presbyterian church in 1861. The town was renamed Donnybrook in 1853-54 and Kalkallo in 1874. Its gold-rush years brought a police station, a jail and a courthouse, and then the North East railway opened at Donnybrook station in 1872 and took the traffic with it. The post office closed in 1971. Zoning changed to Urban Growth Zone in 2012, a year after a 1,120 ha farm was bought for a mixed-use estate. Merrifield covers 880 ha and is planned for 30,000 residents. Cloverton is planned for 30,000 more. Kallo is 730 homes.
Kalkallo sits on the basalt plains, the Gilgai plain, and Bald Hill to the north-west is a volcano that last erupted over a million years ago. Merri Creek runs through the eastern side beside the Kalkallo Grasslands, where threatened native grassland species survive. The Donnybrook Road bluestone bridge dates from 1876. A new estate lawn wants a 60-70 mm cut for two summers, and if the ground under it cracks in summer or sits wet in winter, that belongs in the listing.
Hume's nature strip policy, first adopted on 15 June 2021, leaves the strip to the resident: mowing, edging, weeding, litter.
