About Roxburgh Park
A suburb built to one plan has one kind of lawn, and Roxburgh Park's is a 1990s-2000s block: a small front lawn, a nature strip, a back yard with a pergola and a rectangle of kikuyu or couch that went in when the house was finished. Thirty years on, the lawns are established, the trees have grown and thrown shade on the southern side of the house, and the side gate is a standard width. It is straightforward mowing, and quotes tend to sit close together.
The ground is basalt plain at 184 metres, exposed to the same wind and frost as Craigieburn, with Shankland Reserve and the Broadmeadows Valley Trail the main green space. Kikuyu thatches up in the older lawns and wants a lower first cut in spring; couch browns off in winter and comes back in October.
City of Hume policy: residents keep the nature strip mown, edged and weeded, and the council steps in only for a hazard. The 400 mm figure in Hume's guidelines is a cap on plantings, not a grass height. Every household has had a fortnightly organics bin with a bright green lid, for food scraps and garden waste, since July 2024.
