About Greenvale
Woodlands homestead dates from 1843, a school opened in 1868 and the post office on 1 January 1871, but for a century Greenvale stayed a farming district. 138 people lived here in 1966. The Greenvale Sanatorium stood from 1905 until it closed in 1998; its land is now inside Woodlands Historic Park. The houses came in the 1980s. A new primary school and the shopping centre both opened in 1988, Kolbe Catholic College followed in 2006, and the count reached 11,969 by 2011 and 21,274 at the 2021 census.
Moonee Ponds Creek is the western boundary, Yuroke Creek and its tributaries cross the suburb, and the reservoir sits on those tributaries. Aitken Hill, also called Mount Yuroke, is a volcanic cone at 265 m. Woodlands Historic Park on the west side is a native animal sanctuary and a Wurundjeri heritage site, and the old sanatorium ground is part of it. New turf, anything under two summers old, is cut at 60-70 mm.
Hume City Council's nature strip policy, re-adopted on 12 March 2024, puts regular mowing, edging and weeding of the strip on the resident, and council itself only steps in to make a hazard safe. It reinstates soil, never turf. The green bin takes food and garden waste fortnightly, on the week recycling doesn't go out, and every household has had one since 1 July 2024 at no extra charge.
