Lawn mowing in Oak Park
John Pascoe Fawkner bought 316 hectares here in 1839 and lived on it until 1855; the buyer from his widow renamed it Oak Park in 1879. Houses waited until after World War II, and the 1950s and 60s were the years of fastest growth.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Oak Park lawn
- Merri-bek empties the garden bin every week. Say whether the clippings go in it or stay on the lawn as mulch.
- Measure the side gate. Under 70 cm is push-mower only, and it's worth knowing before a mower turns up with a wide deck.
- Say if the block backs onto the creek reserves on the western side, and whether the back fence can be reached with a mower.
Oak Park lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Oak Park?+
A 180 m² Oak Park lawn prices at $100-$145 per visit in our model. Your bid follows the aerial measurement of your own lawn, not the suburb figure. Say whether clippings go in Merri-bek's weekly bin or need taking away.
Will Merri-bek mow my nature strip in Oak Park?+
No. The council's nature strips page says it does not maintain strips in front of private property. Residents mow, weed, trim the edges and pick up litter; council intervenes only where a strip is a hazard, such as a surface more than 50 mm off kerb level.
How often is the garden bin collected in Oak Park?+
Weekly, on your normal collection day. Merri-bek's food and garden organics bin, lime-green lid, 120 L standard or 240 L, is mandatory for every residential property with a council waste service and is charged through the annual waste charge on rates. Contents go to Veolia at Bulla.
About Oak Park
The railway ran through from 1872 without stopping, and electrification in 1921 did not bring a station either. Oak Park station finally opened in August 1956, two years after the primary school and a year before the post office of 2 April 1957. The high school of 1960 closed in 1997, and seedling oaks were planted on its ground. A Catholic primary opened in 1961. The Winifred Street shops sit by the station. Growth was fastest in the 1950s and 60s. If the lawn has been re-laid since the house went up, give the year.
Moonee Ponds Creek is the western boundary, Pascoe Vale Road and Watt Avenue the eastern, Main Street the southern. Two creek-side reserves hold the Oak Park Sports Centre and the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail. The elevation is 75 m. The suburb is small, 1.9 km². Fawkner's own house on the land was called Belle Vue, or Grand View Park.
Merri-bek City Council does not maintain nature strips in front of private property. Residents mow, weed and trim the edges, and council comes in only where the strip poses a hazard; the guidelines want the surface within 40 mm of kerb and footpath level, and any planting under half a metre. The lime-green-lid food and garden bin is collected weekly on the normal day, 120 L standard or 240 L, paid through the waste charge on rates, since the four-bin service started in July 2023. Rubbish is planned to go fortnightly from July 2027 and the garden bin stays weekly.
