About Strathmore
The Cross Keys hotel opened in 1848 and the railway from Essendon toward Seymour passed through in 1872. Four estates north of Woodland Street were subdivided by the early 1920s: Rosebank, Magdala, Glenview and Woods Farm. Before 1936 the district was North Essendon, and the station kept that name until 1955. A Presbyterian church and Catholic school opened in 1936, the primary school in 1944, the high school in 1958. Population went from 2,985 in 1947 to 8,111 in 2011. Council changed twice: Broadmeadows to Essendon in 1979, then Moonee Valley in 1994.
The suburb is a crescent between Essendon Airport on the west and the Moonee Ponds Creek valley on the north and north-east, which is flood-prone. Woodland Street closes the south, Pascoe Vale Road the east. The Tullamarine Freeway cuts it into two halves; the northern one is Strathmore Heights. Napier Park is a preserved block of old river red gums on land Napier's son donated, and Boeing Reserve has several ovals. Streets that run down toward the creek valley are the ones to describe carefully.
Moonee Valley City Council's local law wants grass and weeds on a property, nature strip included, under 200 mm from ground level, and officers inspect before summer; council can clear an overgrown strip and recover the cost. Street trees are the council's alone, planted and maintained by staff with two years of establishment care, and residents may garden the strip without a permit if they follow the Nature Strip Landscaping Guidelines. The green-lid FOGO bin, food and garden together, is fortnightly on the week between recycling, delivered to houses between February and April 2024.
